I was recently reading about the Muffler Men and how the ones that still remain are scattered all over the United States with several being on the well known Route 66. I found out that several are in Georgia and one was even really close in East Point so we went to check it out. Not far from the Atlanta airport, tucked away on the Virginia Ave exit at a tire shop and across the streets from an airport hotel you won’t be able to miss the huge statue of a tire holding Bunyan. So if you’re wondering what in the world is a Muffler Man, they are huge molded fiberglass statues that were designed in the sixties to advertise businesses. There is also the Uniroyal Gal who was the female version of the Muffler Man. Thousands of these statues were deployed all over the states and these were very common until it became to costly to ship them out and then the fiberglass company making them closed permanently in 1976. Now there are just over a hundred known to remain and they are owned by collectors or still used to advertise a handful of businesses or set up as unique roadside attractions. Fun fact, I found out while researching online that there are people who are obsessed with Muffler Men and travel all over the United States to photograph them all and also those who try and collect as many of them as they can. Does anyone remember Muffler Men when they were still used commonly? Were there more in the Atlanta area? Day 4 of my whirlwind Route 66 road trip from May! OK so I may be a LITTLE behind in posting… The whole reason behind the trip was to attend the Grand Opening Celebration for the new American Giants Museum. This small museum on Route 66 celebrates all things big. The American Giants Museum in Atlanta, Illinois pays tribute to Muffler Men and other oversized fiberglass creations that once were a mainstay of American advertising. The Grand Opening was so much fun, I got to check out all the cool stuff inside the vintage service station themed building, see a few muffler men on the move (including the Gemini GIant on its way to be restored), see the opening remarks and ribbon cutting, watch a newly restored Texaco Big Friend be lifted into place, and meet so many other Instagrammers who were also there to celebrate!
