I gradually got rid of pretty much every maths curriculum we owned. not because they were bad, but because I kept watching my kids sit down to do them and just...go through the motions. they were getting the right answers but had absolutely no idea why any of it mattered. they were doing it because mummy said so, and that was it. so I tried something different. what if instead of drilling the concepts, we just lived them? we counted things at dinner. we talked about splitting things fairly and what "fair" actually means. we read stories where characters had to solve a real maths problem because something in their world actually depended on it. and over time, something shifted. my younger one started pointing out patterns everywhere she went. my older one came home from a restaurant asking why there's a 9% tax AND a 10% service charge and how they calculate the final total??
