Want a home lab but don’t have the space? Here are five digital lab environments you can use to build skills without needing any physical gear. Each one has tradeoffs, so let’s break it down: 1. Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) CML is a simulation platform built by Cisco that runs real Cisco IOS images in a virtual environment. Best for when you want realistic behavior and access to full Cisco command sets. 2. Cisco Packet Tracer Packet Tracer is a free network simulator designed primarily for entry-level certification prep, like CCNA. It doesn’t emulate full IOS behavior, but it’s really good for building basic networks, and practicing CLI skills. 3. GNS3 (Graphical Network Simulator 3) GNS3 is a popular open-source platform that supports multiple vendors like Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, and more. It’s great for intermediate to advanced users who want to simulate real environments or mix multi-vendor labs. 4. EVE-NG (Emulated Virtual Environment - Next Gen) EVE-NG is a powerful emulation platform similar to GNS3, but better suited for larger lab designs. It supports a wide range of vendor images and allows for complex topologies, including enterprise-level sims. 5. Growing large numbers of cells for research often means using a LOT of culture flasks… unless you use multilayer flasks 🔬 These flasks provide the same growth area as multiple traditional flasks while taking up far less incubator space making large-scale cell expansion much more efficient. They also make it much easier to split, expand, and harvest cells compared with handling multiple separate flasks.
