This was my most asked question of 2025.. on job sites, comment section, DMs, you name it. So here it is: Every mural is different so each quote is different. I price my art based on the square footage of the wall and factor in additional expenses where needed, (travel, supplies, etc.). Each wall varies in their own size, surface, and limitations, so often times I price on the lower end of $ square footage if the wall is easier to paint. Whereas, painting a wall with more road blocks or challenges, I’d price it on the higher end of price per square foot. (This same rule can apply to how elaborate a design will be. Simple=cheaper , Detailed=Expensive) If you’re interested in a mural or pricing a mural yourself, know that this how *I* price my murals, as this may be different from how other muralist price their work. Do your research before either hiring a muralist on what you should budget, (typically I suggest having a MINIMUM of $3k ready to go for a smaller scale wall). 🫖 HERE’S THE TEA 🫖 A mural is not just the day we are painting on site. There’s hours of work done behind the scenes before we even put paint on the walls. If we do the math… 10+ hours of design work 🎨 8+ hours of painting 🏡 2+ hours of meetings 🗣️ 5+ hours of driving 🚗 getting supplies and not to mention material cost… At a $500 mural that would equal $10/ hour each, before taxes 🤯 We’re not here to perpetuate the starving artist stereotype 🙅🏼‍♀️ A lot of times women and new business owners will undervalue ourselves, but we work everyday to build something high quality for our clients. We want to paint as many murals for as many people to bring beauty into the world, but in order to do that, we have to have to be realistic with the time and energy we are putting into the world as well. We typically price our murals between $25–$45 per square foot depending on detail, prep, surface, and overall complexity. This one? We charged $22 per square foot. Why lower? • Indoor project • Flat surface • Design was provided • Minimal prep work Total: $7,700 for 350 sq ft. Pricing isn’t random. It’s strategic. Square footage pricing protects us from undercharging and keeps projects predictable for our clients. And before anyone says it — revenue does not equal profit. 👇🏼 I tested painting a mural using VR so you don’t have to: 💸 Cost • Got my headset used for $215 • Sketching app was $8 📶 Setup • You need Wi-Fi — I used my phone hotspot • Lining up a simple rectangle image took about 15 minutes • Very difficult at first • BUT once it was aligned, it stayed in place pretty well 🧱 The wall + time • Wall size: 10 x 17 ft with a Fairly detailed design • Took about 2 hours to sketch with pencil 🔋 Battery • Headset died EXACTLY when I finished luckily • If you need more than ~2 hours… risky. • Re-aligning mid-sketch would be a nightmare 📐 Accuracy & precision • If you need your design perfect to the inch, this isn’t it • Perspective shifts can affect overall placement • Not ideal for super technical layouts 🎨 Where it shines • AMAZING for getting a loose layout down fast • Perfect if you’re going to refine + paint by hand anyway • Huge time saver compared to doodling, gridding, or traditional grid methods 🤡 Final thoughts • You will look ridiculous wearing it • Totally worth it if you can’t use a projector • Saved me a TON of time 🤔 Hot take Is this cheating as an artist… or just working smarter? 👉🏼 Follow @caroline.in.color for more murals, painting hacks, tools, and experiments

I’ve fooled myself before with images of a sketch thinking it was the mural 😂 My process includes 2-3 concept sketches in full color, mocked up on a photo of your wall if available, that way there are 0 surprises and your mural looks exactly like the concept you approved.

Scaffolding rental and lifts aren’t include and for complex portrait and realistic faces I add $500 for each figure.
