Vomiting and diarrhoea are two of the most common symptoms we see in dogs and cats. The challenge is that these signs can be caused by many different problems. From something relatively simple like a dietary upset, to infections such as parvovirus, or more serious conditions like pancreatitis. Because the symptoms often look the same, it can be very difficult to determine the underlying cause over the phone. What might appear to be a mild stomach upset in one pet could be something far more serious in another. This is why we always recommend bringing your pet in for an examination. Seeing your pet allows us to assess their overall condition, review their history, and work with you to identify the real cause and the most appropriate treatment. We’re never trying to be difficult when we suggest a visit. Our priority is making sure your pet receives the safest and most effective care possible. #pethealth #doghealth #cathealth #vetadvice #petcare #veterinarian #thevillagevet

Vomit is gross, but it’s also information. The color can help you decide if this is a “watch and rest” moment or a “call the vet now” moment. 🟡 Yellow is often bile and can happen when a dog vomits on an empty stomach, especially early in the morning. ⚪ Clear or foamy liquid can be stomach fluid or saliva, sometimes linked to nausea, reflux, or mild irritation. 🟢 Green may appear after eating grass, but it can also be bile. 🟤 Brown is often partly digested food or what comes up when a dog eats too fast. But if it looks or smells like feces, or you suspect a blockage, don’t wait. 🔴 Bright red vomit can indicate fresh bleeding and should be treated as urgent. ⚫ Black, coffee-ground–like vomit may suggest digested blood or serious stomach bleeding. This is an emergency and requires immediate veterinary care. Color is only one piece. What matters most is the whole picture: repeated vomiting, bloated belly, lethargy, pale gums, pain, inability to keep water down, or vomiting in a puppy or senior dog should push you to call a vet quickly. If your dog ever vomits and you’re unsure, take a photo and note the time. It helps your vet a lot. #DogHealth #PetFirstAid #DogCare #VetAdvice #DogParents PetSafety doglover

Vomiting isn’t a diagnosis… it’s a symptom. And there are MANY causes. Some are mild (diet change, eating too fast). Some are serious. 🧦 Foreign Body When a dog swallows something they shouldn’t like socks, toys, bones, or trash. It can get stuck and block the intestines. Signs: repeated vomiting, not eating, lethargy. ⚠️ Often a surgical emergency. 🔥 Pancreatitis Inflammation of the pancreas, commonly triggered by fatty foods. Signs: vomiting, painful belly, lethargy, diarrhea. Can range from mild to life-threatening. If your dog is vomiting more than once or seems off, call your vet. #vomiting #vetmed #foreignbody #pancreatitis #vettech

This is not “just vomiting.” Unproductive retching (trying to vomit but nothing comes out) can indicate gastric torsion (bloat) — a life-threatening condition. You may have less than 60 minutes to reach a surgeon. Dog vomit color indicates underlying issues: white foam usua
4,121

Dog vomit color indicates underlying issues: white foam usually means acid reflux or an empty stomach, yellow/green signals bile from an empty stomach or grass ingestion, and red/brown suggests blood or serious digestive issues. While one-off yellow/white foam may be minor, red or brown vomit is an emergency requiring immediate veterinary attention.  Here is a breakdown of what each color means: White Foam: Common causes include indigestion, acid reflux, or a, empty stomach. It can sometimes be associated with kennel cough or, in rare cases, more serious conditions like bloat. Yellow Foam/Liquid: This is generally bile, indicating the stomach is empty and the bile is causing irritation, often seen in the early morning. It may also stem from gastrointestinal upset, pancreatitis, or parasites. Green: Green vomit often points to the ingestion of grass, which irritates the stomach. However, it can also indicate high levels of bile or, in some cases, ingestion of toxic substances like rat poison. Red or Pink: This indicates the presence of blood, which can suggest irritation, stomach ulcers, or a more serious internal issue. Brown: Brown vomit usually indicates the regurgitation of food that was not properly digested, often because the dog ate too fast or swallowed too much air. However, it can also indicate the presence of digested blood, requiring urgent care.  . . . #dogstagram #stomach #food #acid #posion

🐾 Vomiting & Diarrhea in Pets: What You Should Know 🐾

🐾 Vomiting & Diarrhea in Pets: What You Should Know 🐾 Vomiting and diarrhea are common signs of illness in pets—but they are symptoms, not diagnoses. Many very different diseases can look the same at home, which is why a full veterinary exam is so important. Some possible underlying causes include: • Parvovirus – a serious, highly contagious viral disease, especially in puppies • Kidney disease – toxin buildup in the body can trigger severe GI signs • Pancreatitis – inflammation of the pancreas, often linked to fatty foods • Intestinal parasites – such as roundworms, hookworms, and giardia • Toxin ingestion – medications, plants, foods, or household chemicals 🔍 Why a full exam matters Vomiting and diarrhea alone don’t tell us why your pet is sick. A complete physical exam—sometimes paired with lab work or imaging—helps your veterinarian rule out serious conditions, start the right treatment, and avoid delays that could worsen your pet’s condition. 🚨 When should you seek care? If your pet has persistent vomiting or diarrhea, blood in vomit or stool, lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, or signs of dehydration, contact your veterinarian promptly. Early evaluation can be lifesaving. When GI signs show up, it’s always safer to check—because the cause matters. At Virginia Veterinary Centers in Midlothian, our skilled team of veterinary professionals are here for you! ❤️🐶🐱 #PetHealth #VomitingAndDiarrhea #ParvoAwareness #Pancreatitis #KidneyDiseaseInPets #Parasites #VetExamMatters #PreventiveCare #VVC #Virginiavetcentersmidlothian #veturgentcare #veterinaryinternalmedicine

532,878

When a dog pukes white foam, it usually means their stomach is irritated or empty and not feeling well. The white foam is often a mix of saliva and stomach acid, which can build up when a dog hasn’t eaten for a while, has mild gastritis, or has an upset stomach. This can happen if a dog eats something irritating, swallows too much air, or has a brief stomach upset from stress or changes in food. Occasional white foam vomiting can be minor, but if it happens repeatedly, is accompanied by lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, or pain, it could point to something more serious like infection, blockage, or bloat. In those cases, it’s important to contact a veterinarian, as persistent vomiting is not normal and can become dangerous if left untreated.

If you've had a pet in your life for a while, they have likely vomited at some point. Just like us, pets feel sick to the stomach occasionally, and vomiting every once in a while is usually nothing to worry about. But, how do you know if vomiting is an emergency? 🤔 One sure-fire way to know is to call your vet or an emergency hospital. But, it is always good to be able to recognize some obvious signs yourself so that you can act quickly and decisively if you need to. Vomiting is considered an emergency if... 👉 It is persistent, continuous, or severe (a large amount) 👉 It is bloody, black, or occurs with other symptoms such as loss of appetite, weakness, or diarrhea (bloody or otherwise) 👉 You know or suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn't have such as a toxin or foreign body 👉 Your dog is retching without producing anything. ❗️❗️❗️The last one is particularly for large breed dogs or deep-chested dogs who are prone to a condition called Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV). When a GDV occurs, the stomach becomes distended and twists on itself, cutting off circulation to major organs. This condition can progress very rapidly and is life-threatening. So if you notice your dog retching without producing anything or only bringing up foam, get them to a vet IMMEDIATELY. VRCC is open 8am Monday through 6pm on Saturday, day and night for emergencies. If you have concerns about your pet, don't hesitate to call us at (804)784-8722.

Vomiting isn’t a diagnosis - it’s a symptom. Sometimes it’s a simple stomach upset. Sometimes it’s infection, pancreatitis, obstruction, or early systemic illness. The frustrating part is that the early stages can look identical. In this video, Dr Ebeneze explains: • when monitoring briefly can be reasonable • which signs matter most (appetite, hydration, pain, blood) • what diagnostics we use (blood tests, x-rays, ultrasound) Watch the full guide on website #TakuruaVets #ChristchurchVet #VetChristchurch #VomitingInPets #DogVomiting #CatVomiting #PetHealthNZ #PetCare #DogHealth #CatHealth #CanterburyNZ #ChristchurchNZ
