He was openly skeptical of the belief that a completely free press and a "marketplace of ideas" would always lead to truth, good governance and safeguard liberity. He argued that information environments could easily become distorted by sensationalism, partisan goals, and poor editorial standards, especially in countries low trust and with weak institutions. He often referred to the situation in the Philippines during the late 1960s and early 1970s where a highly partisan press created constant accusations, conspiracy theories, and political division. He believed this overwhelming amount of conflicting and unreliable information confused the public and weakened trust in government. This chaos contributed to the instability that led to Ferdinand Marcos's declaration of martial law in 1972. For him, this was key lesson in how an unregulated marketplace of ideas does not necessarily favor the most truthful concepts and rewards only the loudest or most politically beneficial ones. He argued that such conditions could ironically weaken the social order and trust required to maintain freedom, rather than strengthen it.
