In 1223, in the small village of Greccio, St. Francis of Assisi created the first Nativity scene (Presepe). His goal was simple: to help people understand the story of Christmas through real images, real people, and real emotion. That idea spread quickly across Italy, then throughout Europe, becoming a central part of Christmas culture. Over time, the Presepe evolved from living scenes to handcrafted figurines, each one telling a story of daily life. Nowhere did this tradition become more artistic than in Naples. Here, the Nativity scene turned into a true form of art. Neapolitan artisans became famous worldwide for their detailed figurines, expressive faces, and entire miniature cities built around the scene. Even today, Via San Gregorio Armeno is known globally as the heart of this tradition, attracting visitors, collectors, and artists from all over the world. Let’s talk for a minute about that nativity scene in your home. A famous Catholic monk, Francis of Assisi, came up with the nativity scene or créche in 1223. St Francis originally staged a “live” nativity scene or Christmas play in Greccio, Italy to educate passersby about the birth of Jesus. Artists soon began carving nativity sets for public places, churches, monasteries and homes. The original nativity scenes were not for decoration - they were what Catholics call sacramentals: similar to crucifixes, candles, and rosaries. And Franciscan monks specifically use the crèche to help with contemplative prayer. If you want to pray with the spirituality of a Franciscan monk this Christmas, kneel in prayer in front of that nativity set in your home, imagining the sites, sounds, and smells of the moment when God became a human.
