Tried making my favorite natural mango soda with a ginger bug this time — woke up to a mini explosion! The bottle blasted open with all that overnight fermentation. Wild, fizzy, and a little too excited to come out. Fermentation lesson learnt! Precautions to Take for Natural Fermented Sodas: 1. Use Sturdy Bottles: Always use swing-top glass bottles meant for fermentation. Avoid plastic or thin glass. 2. Burp the Bottles Daily: Release gas pressure once or twice a day during fermentation, especially in warm weather. 3. Don’t Over-Ferment: With a strong starter like ginger bug, 12–24 hours is often enough. Refrigerate once it’s fizzy enough. 4. Room Temperature Control: Ferment in a cool, dark place. High temperatures speed up carbonation dangerously. 5. Leave Headspace: Always leave about 1–2 inches of space at the top to prevent pressure build-up. 6. Test with One Bottle First: Keep one plastic bottle—when it’s hard to squeeze, the soda is carbonated enough to chill and consume.

Borax and sugar create an effective homemade ant bait that can help eliminate unwanted ants in your garden. Here’s how it works: Sugar acts as a lure for ants due to its sweet taste. When you mix sugar with borax, it attracts ants to the bait. The ants consume the bait and carry it back to their colony. They share the mixture with other ants, including the queen, through a process called trophallaxis, where they regurgitate and share food. Borax, a naturally occurring mineral, is toxic to ants when ingested. Once it enters their system, it disrupts their digestive processes, eventually leading to their death. To use borax and sugar as an ant killer, mix the following: - 1 part borax - 1 parts sugar Place small amounts of the mixture in areas where ants are frequently seen, ensuring it’s out of reach of children and pets. These little bugs are ladybird larvae. Soon, this one will turn into a ladybird 🐞 Ladybirds and ladybird larvae are predators and an effective natural control for aphids. The hatch has begun! These tiny Japanese Giant Mantis nymphs (𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢) entered the world this morning from a ~2" egg sac called an ootheca. It always blows my mind how many emerge from such a tiny space. After a couple of molts, many of these will be released into my garden as natural pest control, although I do plan to raise a handful of the most robust as breeding stock for next season. #bug #insects #reptile #macro #nature
