Nandanar, also known as Thirunaalaippovaar, is a revered figure in Tamil Shaivism, recognized as the 18th among the 63 Nayanars, saints devoted to Lord Shiva. Born into a low-caste (Parayar) family, likely in the 7th or 8th century, he worked as a laborer, making drums and string instruments, in the village of Adhanur, Tamil Nadu. Despite societal restrictions, his deep devotion to Lord Shiva drove him to seek darshan at the temple in Chidambaram, a significant Shiva shrine. Due to his caste, Nandanar was barred from entering temples. His desire to visit Chidambaram led to conflicts, including with his Brahmin landlord, who set him the task of ploughing 250 acres in one night—an impossible feat. Miraculously, with Lord Shiva's grace, he completed it, earning permission to go. At Chidambaram, he faced another test: walking through a sacrificial fire. Emerging unharmed and radiant with sacred ash, he was accepted by the priests, entered the temple, and is said to have merged with Lord Shiva, symbolizing ultimate union with the divine. #tamil #history #shiva #india

He was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva and one of the 63 Nayanars who are revered for their unwavering dedication to Shiva. Siruthonda Nayanar, originally named Paranjothi, was a general in the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I’s army. He fought valiantly in many battles but later renounced his military life to devote himself to Lord Shiva and serve Shiva’s devotees. His name “Siruthonda” means “the humble servant,” reflecting his nature of serving other devotees without pride or ego. One day, a Shaiva mendicant came to Siruthonda’s house seeking hospitality. Siruthonda, being a perfect host and a devout servant of Shiva’s devotees, welcomed him with utmost respect and inquired about his needs. The mendicant asked for a rare meal: the flesh of a young boy. Though shocked at the unusual request, Siruthonda immediately offered his only son, Seeralan, to fulfill the mendicant’s wish. Siruthonda and his wife prepared their son for the sacrificial meal, but they were heartbroken. However, their devotion to Lord Shiva and His devotees remained unwavering. Just as they were about to serve the mendicant the flesh, Lord Shiva, disguised as the mendicant, revealed His true form and stopped them. He blessed Siruthonda for his immense devotion and sacrifice, restoring his son to life. This story exemplifies Siruthonda Nayanar’s total surrender to God, his unflinching faith, and his willingness to sacrifice everything, even his own child, in service of Shiva and His devotees. Lord Shiva’s revelation was a testament to Siruthonda’s greatness, showing that true devotion transcends worldly attachments. His life and this story are immortalized in Sekkizhar’s Periya Puranam, which narrates the lives of the 63 Nayanars, and Siruthonda Nayanar is revered as one of the foremost saints in Tamil Shaivism.‼️
