Neate Donuts is opened by the same owners of JJ Bean and we picked up some donuts for a company event recently. The donuts were really good and comparable to Lucky's Doughnuts. ⠀ ⠀ I tried Lavender Earl Grey, Dubai Chocolate, Glazed, Triple Chocolate Cake (gf) and Banana Cream. My fave was probably the Lavender Earl Grey but the Banana Cream was surprisingly good.⠀ ⠀ The Benny & the Donut contains a poached egg and smoked meat with hollandaise sauce wrapped in malasada dough. They're made fresh hourly in limited quantities. It was pretty cool how they had a perfectly poached egg inside and it was very creative but I think I will stick to the sweet donuts. ⠀ ⠀ They're located in an office building (Oceanic Plaza) near Waterfront and the Convention Centre. A Family Legacy Returns to Downtown Vancouver 🍩 The project comes from the family behind JJ Bean Coffee Roasters, reconnecting with a much older chapter of their story when coffee and donuts went hand in hand. Long before Vancouver knew the name JJ Bean, a Welsh immigrant named Frank “Gumpy” Neate was already part of the city’s early coffee culture. In the 1940s, he and his wife Ella ran Neates Coffee, pairing roasted beans with fresh donuts and delivering them around the city by bicycle. Over time the coffee side of the business grew into what is now JJ Bean, while the donut part quietly faded into family history. One of the shop’s specialties is its savoury donuts, including an Egg Benny donut that turns brunch into something unexpected. But the sweet side deserves attention too. My personal favourites were the Blueberry Yogurt donut and the Milk Cereal donut, both light, nostalgic, and just the right amount of indulgent. In a city that has no shortage of donut shops, Neate Donuts stands out because of that connection to Vancouver’s food history. It is not just another sweet stop downtown. I learned about Neate Donuts by JJ Bean Coffee via @nomsmag and I was in the area, so I had to go check it out. According to the website, it was always in the vision to serve coffee and donuts together. The grand opening is not until May 5-10, but it has opened its doors now at 1066 West Hastings Street. I prefer yeast donuts over cake donuts so I was quite excited to give this a go. I ordered two donuts to try: Lavender Earl Grey (a seasonal flavour) and Lemon Cream. Both cream filled donuts, plus a medium latte (using JJ Bean coffee, of course). In my opinion, I think there's room for improvement (DM me if you want to hear more) and some other places do it a bit better.
