Did you know that the human brain contains approximately 100 billion microscopic cells called neurons—roughly the same number of stars in the Milky Way? Synapses are essential for neuronal function. If neurons are cells specialized in transmitting signals to individual target cells, synapses are the means by which they do so. When a nerve signal reaches the end of a neuron, it cannot simply continue on to the next cell. Instead, it must trigger the release of neurotransmitters, which carry the impulse across the synapse to the next neuron. Once a nerve impulse has triggered the release of neurotransmitters, these chemical messengers traverse the tiny synaptic cleft and are picked up by receptors on the surface of the next cell.
