2019, NGAN Excel, the education arm of the Next Generation Action Network, held a series of meetings about several schools in Oak Cliff, continuing the conversation about merging Elijah M. Peace Elementary and W.W. Bushman Elementary, which were both in the same neighborhood. One school was a B-rated campus, and the other was an ACE campus in need of additional help. Over the years, we faced a lot of pushback on this plan, with critics saying it would fail and that the combined school would have too many students. Today, I am grateful that we pushed forward. I am proud to report that the newly named Albert C. Black STEAM Academy has over 900 students, a $45 million brand-new facility, and is now an A-rated campus. I salute the principal, the entire staff, the community, and district leadership for working with us to bring this vision to life. As someone who was born and raised in Oak Cliff and a former student of W.W. Bushman myself, this accomplishment is deeply personal. Many people ask me what my impact is in education — this is just one of the many different things we have done under my leadership to make a difference in our education system. But this is not about me. It’s about us, working together to ensure we invest in a future generation that doesn’t have to face the same challenges we did. I also want to say thank you to former trustee and now Dallas City Council member Maxie Johnson for his leadership and for seeing this project through. His commitment to this community has been invaluable in making this vision a reality.
