Prince Fielder effectively saw his 12-season Major League career come to an end on August 10, 2016, after a chronic neck condition led to two spinal fusion surgeries, making it medically impossible for him to continue playing. His injury issues began in 2014, when he underwent a cervical fusion procedure to repair a herniated disc, snapping his remarkable streak of 547 consecutive games played. In 2016, a second herniation was discovered above the original injury, and a follow-up spinal fusion surgery ultimately convinced doctors that the physical strain of baseball—particularly the repetitive motion of swinging—posed too great a risk to his long-term health. Although he announced he could no longer play, Fielder did not formally retire right away. Instead, he was placed on the disabled list due to medical disqualification, allowing him to collect the remainder of his guaranteed contract, which was paid out by the Texas Rangers, the Detroit Tigers, and insurance. He remained on the disabled list through 2020 before being officially released in 2017. Fielder’s career ended with six All-Star selections, three Silver Slugger awards, and 319 home runs—remarkably the same total as his father, Cecil Fielder—cementing his legacy as one of the most feared power hitters of his era despite a premature and injury-forced exit from the game.
