This is the Norman haircut; a jazzy 11th century style characterised by a shaved back of the head, and a longer, floppy fringe in the front. A reverse skullet, if you will. You can see it most prominently in depictions of Norman men on the Bayeux Tapestry. The origins of the cut aren’t clear, with some suggesting it has its roots in Frankish military practices and others pointing to more practical reasons, like not getting your hair tangled up in chain mail. Some of the long-haired folk I met at the Battles of Hastings reenactment this year confirmed it was painful and annoying to get your hair caught up, and as someone who spent most of the 00s wearing a pink chainmail halter top for nights out, I can attest. Regardless of its exact origins, the semi-skinhead look became a distinctive feature of the Normans and was used to distinguish them from other groups, such as the English, who typically wore their hair longer. The eagle-eyed amongst you might notice this isn’t the actual Bayeux Tapestry. This is a spectacular copy of a section of it made by a French guy I met at the Battle of Hastings reenactment. He hand stitched this version over six months, featuring him and his mates in the starring roles. And yes, he had the cut IRL! #Normans #BattleOfHastings #1066 #Haircut

A first hand account of John de Courcy can be found in the writings of Giraldus Cambrensis. The description is a surprising one for a man who was one of the most successful Norman knights in Ireland. It was his bold temperament and a knowledge of how to play the game that gave him determination. His family had arrived in England in the entourage of William the Conquerer. John also married smart though. His wife Affreca was the daughter of the King of Man Guõrøor Olafsson who was married to Finnguala Nic Lochlainn of the Cenel Eoghain. His sister was married to the Earl of Howth. All very useful ties for a renegade who would soon come under scrutiny #IrishHistory #johndecourcy #normans #knights #storyofirelandstartshere
