We have a complicated relationship with the idea of settling & I get it. The culturally prescribed meaning of settling is chronically accepting less than your needs or desires because of fear, obligation, or convenience. And when these core needs go unmet (often because our partner simply can’t meet them before they do their own work) we find ourselves stuck, resentful, and disconnected. So yes, don’t settle — but with a caveat: Choosing is different than settling. Never settle on your core relational needs (which are slightly varied for everyone), but we actually do need to settle on other things. Never settle for someone who doesn’t see you. Who can’t sit with you in the discomfort of the unknown. Who doesn’t challenge you or believe in your capacity for growth. Never settle for someone who doesn’t make your nervous system feel regularly safe. Who wants to find love, but not build it. But you will choose someone imperfect. We can project all we want, but we’re all human. Imperfections are our trademark so maybe it’s about asking what imperfections we can live with (and maybe even eventually love)? And whose character aligns with your core relational needs, whatever they may be? I recognize this is a deeply nuanced, tricky, and larger conversation. I also acknowledge that historically, women have had to settle based on an imbalance of power and now more than ever, we have choice. The intention of this post is never (ever) to strip our choices, but instead to explore intention choice rather than taking “never settle” at its cultural face-value.
