The Rank-Nullity Theorem is an important result in linear algebra that tells us how a linear map splits a vector space in subspaces. Given a linear map A (for example, a matrix), vectors that are mapped to zero are called elements of the null space, or kernel. The set of outputs under multiplication is called the image. This decomposition allows out to determine the dimensions of one subspace if we know the other. In finite dimensions, this result can tell us whether a matrix is invertible: it can only be inverted if the kernel is just the zero vector - this means no information is “lost”. This also allows use to know if a system of equations is solvable. We can also generalise this equation to other algebraic structures into the first isomorphism theorem of algebra. In infinite dimensions, we can use similar results to analyse linear operators, allowing us to determine existence and uniqueness of solutions to certain differential equations. We often think of empty space as truly empty, but quantum physics says otherwise. Physicist David Tong explains this idea using a visual simulation that shows the vacuum as something active rather than calm or empty. Tiny fluctuations happen all the time, with virtual particles briefly appearing and disappearing. This is a normal feature of quantum physics, not an exception. One real effect of this hidden activity is the Casimir effect. When two uncharged metal plates are placed extremely close together, they are gently pulled toward each other. The reason is that quantum fluctuations outside the plates are stronger than those in the small gap between them, creating a net force. This effect has been measured and matters in very small scale technologies. Seeing “nothing” as something active changes how we think about space itself.
