To perform operations with fractions, start by ensuring the denominators are the same for addition and subtraction. Once the denominators match, add or subtract the numerators while keeping the denominator unchanged, and simplify if possible. For multiplication, simply multiply the numerators together and the denominators together, then reduce the fraction to its simplest form. Division requires flipping the second fraction (taking its reciprocal) and then proceeding as you would with multiplication. Always simplify the final result to make it as concise as possible. #math #learning #fractions #animation #reels

🍕Pizza can be a great analogy for adding fractions. The denominator (bottom number) is essentially telling us about the size of our slices. If the denominators are the same, our slices are the same size, and we can go ahead and add (or subtract) the fractions, keeping the denominator the same and working on the numerators (top numbers): ⅐ + ⁴⁄₇ = ⁵⁄₇ 🍕If the denominators are different, that means our slices are different sizes and we can’t just add them. We must first cut them into smaller slices which are the same size. This is known as ‘finding common denominators’. One way of doing this is to multiply the top and bottom of each fraction by the other fraction’s denominator. Here’s an example: ¾ + ⅕ ✨ We can multiply the top and bottom of ¾ by 5 to give ¹⁵⁄₂₀ ✨ We can multiply the top and bottom of ⅕ by 4 to give ⁴⁄₂₀ Now our slices are the same size (our denominators are the same) we can go ahead and add: ¹⁵⁄₂₀ + ⁴⁄₂₀ = ¹⁹⁄₂₀ 👉For more fractions goodness, check out our Fractions Ebook. It’s fun, light-hearted and explains the ‘why’ behind working with fractions. Find it on our website or comment FRACTIONS for a link to purchase. “Amazing book, easy to understand, my daughter is loving the book. She had an exam last week and had few questions with fractions. She used the methods from the book and had all her questions answered correctly, she felt very proud.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This has been a great guide to learning fractions and all the rules, tips and tricks to make learning fun and easy.” ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Super well paced, engaging and well explained. Today’s letter is N, and we’re talking Numerator! Here’s a math tip I wish I’d known earlier: After years of teaching the quadratic formula, I realized students often only divide one term in the numerator by 2a. That’s a mistake! Now, I split the quadratic formula into two fractions—giving us two numerators—and guess what? Fewer mistakes. More clarity. A total game-changer. #TeacherTips #MathHacks #QuadraticFormula #Numerator #AlgebraTeacher #MathTeacherLife #EducationContent #MathHelp #HighSchoolMath #ViralMath #MathTricks #MathIsFun #MathExplained #MathEducation

SAVE THIS FOR YOUR IMPROPER FRACTIONS/MIXED NUMBERS UNIT!

SAVE THIS FOR YOUR IMPROPER FRACTIONS/MIXED NUMBERS UNIT!   Remember when we were kids, and the teacher taught us how to convert an improper fraction to a mixed number?   We were told to:   ➗ Divide the numerator by the denominator   ➗ Make the quotient the whole number   ➗ Use the remainder as the new numerator, keeping the denominator the same  But *why* does that method work? 🤔   Here’s a visual to help make sense of it!   1️⃣ Draw a shape—any shape! (I recommend squares 🟪 or rectangles since they’re the easiest to partition freehand). 2️⃣ Divide the shape into equal parts based on the denominator. (For example, if the denominator is 2, split each shape into 2 equal parts). 3️⃣ Shade in the number of parts that match the numerator. (If the numerator is 3, shade in 3 parts across your shapes.)   4️⃣ Count your shaded parts! In this example, you’ll see:     ✅️One whole shape is fully shaded     ✅️ The second shape has only half shaded   This shows that 3/2 = 1 1/2! 💥 And what makes it even better is that this works in reverse, too! You can use the same method to convert mixed numbers back to improper fractions— making the algorithm -- that students will undoubtedly need to learn for fractions with larger numerators and denominators -- more intuitive! (Cause if it's 78/65, we're not shading in 78 parts, are we? 😆) This visual approach helps kids understand the why behind the steps, rather than just memorizing a rule! 💪🏾   Drop a 👀 if you see what we did there! 😄💜   [Math teacher, math coach, math interventionist, educator, teacher, Principal, Superintendent] Have you ever seen this visual approach to converting improper fractions into mixed numbers before?
