The vast majority of the lightning and magic in this scene were designed from scratch using contact mic recordings and phase plant! I’ve found that certain grating metal sounds can be great for lightning when slowed down and modulated really heavily. As far as mixing goes, I am utilizing more surround convolution reverbs routed to an object bed to better place the SFX in the scene (trying to emulate the large cavernous space it takes place in). The initial explosion of energy was especially fun to automate on this one, as I really tried to make the sound encircle the listener. I hope it was saturated just enough with sound to be overwhelming, but not muddy. As always let me know your thoughts! for five days, we hosted a spatial sound designer @daniele.fabris in our studio to create a custom audio setup for our installations. @elektrojakub on our side, together with Daniele, designed a speaker model based on a hybrid ellipsoid shape, equipped with a bass reflex. After a few prototypes, we fine-tuned the design and EQ before 3D printing four final units. Daniele then connected the speaker system to a custom version of his multichannel spatial audio software, enabling creative control of different sources within a 3D soundfield. Throw on some headphones for this Re-Sound Designed #Gundam scene I did mixed in Dolby Atmos using only @sansound3 SANWEAR–GT earbuds for the whole process. The binaural version of the Atmos mix works best on headphones. 

There is a whole lot going on visually throughout this scene, so it was a really fun challenge to saturate the design enough, but not have it feel too busy/ muddy. The missiles and explosions were especially fun to automate. 

I also felt that getting the shifts in audio perspective from inside or outside the suit was really important, so I’m automating a fair amount of low pass eq and convolution verb as needed to achieve that. As always, I’d love to hear what you think!

Sound Made Visible: The Geometry of Vibration The visual representation of sound has fascinated scientists and artists alike, offering a tangible glimpse into the invisible world of vibration. Cymatics, the study of wave phenomena, demonstrates how sound frequencies can create intricate geometric patterns in physical media such as water, sand, or metal plates. When a surface is exposed to a specific frequency, it vibrates in distinct ways, forming symmetrical shapes that mirror the harmonic structures found in music. These patterns, often resembling mandalas or crystalline formations, reveal how sound naturally organizes matter into geometric forms. The connection between sound and visualization extends beyond cymatics. In modern acoustic research, spectrograms transform sound waves into visual landscapes, displaying harmonic overtones, rhythmic structures, and melodic contours as intricate graphs of frequency over time. Similarly, digital synthesis and wave modeling use mathematical functions to generate sound-based geometric patterns, allowing composers and sound designers to manipulate waveforms with precision. These advancements reinforce the idea that music is not merely an auditory experience but a spatial and visual one as well. "Spatial Realism" is just my way of saying that, at the very bottom of everything, there is just more "space". When researching various ontological perspectives, I wanted a synthesis between "Ontic Structural Realism" - believing that the relations between structures are fundamental - and "Object Oriented Ontology" - believing objects deserve as equally a fundamental status as the relations holding them together. "Synthesis" requires converging the "thesis" and "antithesis" and seeing what emerges when the dust has settled. "Spatial Realism" was that emergent thing: It posits that, whether or not you believe objects or the relations between structures are more "real", none of it could exist without an underlying (and interrelated) "space". The significance of thinking about "spaces" (not just "outer space") becomes clear through the world models built by Buddhism. In the comprehensive teachings of Buddhahāsa Bhikkhu - widsom built upon millenia of extremely "Lindy" beliefs and practices - we learn of the Buddhist element of "ākāśa-dhātu": the "element of space". In this sacred yet holistically rich Buddhist ontology, "space" is the sixth element, completing the total set (along with: earth, fire, water, wind & consciousness); in the wisdom of the Eastern tradition, "space" is the keystone to every other part of reality because, as Bhikkhu puts it, "there must be empty space for something to happen within." Modern research, like the 2023 "Assembly Theory", have attempted to quantise the properties and emergent results of an "assembly space" from which all known objects in the universe are assembled within. Successful or not, the attempt reafirms the significance of the spatial element in modern as well as ancient thinking. Whether it be the spaces of "potentials" or spaces of the "Adjacent Possible"; the abstract, "blanket" spaces of "Quantum Field Theory", "problem" spaces across different domains or simply the space of the cosmos itself: "space" in all it's beauty, appears at the base of it all. Throw on some headphones for this Re-Sound Designed #demonslayer scene I mixed in Dolby Atmos using only @sansound3 SANWEAR–GT earbuds for the entire process. The binaural version of the Atmos mix works best on headphones. This is by far one of my most requested scenes to redesign, and I really wanted to do it justice! The biggest challenge was the sheer amount of on-screen action. You end up walking the line between accurately depicting what’s on screen, and over-saturating your design. I tired to build the SFX saturation to a breaking point, where a distorted squealing acts as the climax, bringing the house down (literally). Almost like there is too much going on to be allowed, and the world is righting itself. This was an especially hard Dolby mix, which took me a long time to complete, but I hope the final result puts a new spin on this insane scene! This is the final in a series of 10 spatial audio redesigns I’m doing in collaboration with SAN Sound! It has been a pleasure to work with them, and their GT earbuds continue to impress me with their clear binaural spatial placement in a small wireless form factor.
