He is the king of all the Norse gods. Odin is the god of war, poetry, and magic. But he is mostly known as the god of wisdom. The Vikings pray to Odin before every big battle. They want him to smile at them. They want him to give them victory. Odin is a very interesting god. He does not sit on a golden throne all day. Sometimes, he walks among normal humans. He dresses up like a poor, old wanderer. He wears a heavy dark cloak and a wide hat to hide his face. If you look closely, you will see he only has one eye. This is a very famous story. Odin wanted to be the smartest being in the whole universe. He went to a magical well of knowledge. He had to give up his own eye to drink the water of wisdom. He did it without fear. This proves how much he cares about knowing everything. Odin is always watching the world. He has two special black ravens. Their names are Huginn and Muninn. In English, this means Thought and Memory. Every morning, they fly across the earth. Every night, they sit on Odin's shoulders. They whisper the secrets of men into his ear. In the Vikings show, Ragnar Lothbrok feels very close to Odin. Ragnar even thinks Odin is his ancestor. The Allfather guides Ragnar on his long journeys. There is a very famous scene in the show. After Ragnar dies, Odin comes down to earth. He visits Ragnar's sons to give them the sad news. The sons see the one-eyed wanderer in the storm. Finally, Odin rules a huge, beautiful hall. Born of the trickster god Loki and the giantess Angrboða, Jörmungandr was one of three monstrous children whose existence was considered a threat to the gods themselves. The moment Odin learned of its birth he cast the serpent into the ocean surrounding Midgard — the world of humans. But the ocean did not contain it. Jörmungandr grew so enormous that it circled the entire earth and took its own tail into its mouth — an image known as the Ouroboros, one of the oldest symbols in all of recorded civilization, appearing independently across Egyptian, Greek, Hindu and Norse traditions. Thor — the god of thunder — and Jörmungandr are destined enemies. The Prose Edda records their confrontation at Ragnarök in precise detail: Thor will slay the World Serpent with his hammer Mjölnir, take nine steps, and fall dead from its venom. The serpent's release of its own tail is the signal that Ragnarök has begun — the end of the world. It is not a monster the gods defeated. It is a countdown they cannot stop.
