I love my Welsummers🤩 I’ve had a bunch of people messaging me about olive eggers and wondering what their lineage is, and to be honest I’m too excited to talk about it 🤣 it’s been a while since I’ve shared about my olive eggers, so here we go! The secret is heritage breeds. When you have heritage breeds, the birds haven’t lost any of their amazing characteristics to overbreeding. They live a natural life, not forced to do anything, like lay in the winter, or forced into confinement in a small cage. They’re bred slowly and naturally over years and years, and when you get yours, yes they’re pricey, but you won’t be spending a bunch of money on sick hens either. They’ll be healthy, amazing foragers, with strong genetics. Overbred hatchery chicks sometimes don’t even know how to forage or peck the ground anymore 😭 One of the characteristics of heritage Welsummers, is pure true egg color and heavy speckles. So, bringing it back to how that contributes to my olive eggers. I have heritage ameraucanas, and heritage Welsummers. Both lay vibrant eggs, the ameraucanas lay bright blue, and the Welsummers, a deep terracotta with dark splatters and speckles. When they’re bred together, the offspring that results is an F1 olive egger. So while the F1 is creating the egg, it will travel through her system as a blue egg, but be coated with brown before it’s laid, which creates a trick of the eye, a green egg. Because the brown comes from a Welsummer, speckles will also most likely be contributed. Sometimes the eggs look more blue, sometimes darker green, sometimes minty, sometimes the illusion of gold, and if there’s a heavy bloom- my favorite - gray😍 Backcrossing is a whole other realm, and what I tackled this year. We can get into that later! So.
