Omega Centauri ⭐ This is a star cluster located in the constellation Centaurus. Hubble captured this colorful array of about 100,000 stars residing in the crowded core of this giant globular cluster, which is a densely packed and roughly spherical group of stars bound together by gravity. This reveals only a small region inside Omega Centauri, which boasts nearly 10 million stars in total! The stars of Omega Centauri are between 10 billion and 12 billion years old and the cluster lies about 16,000 light years from Earth. The majority of stars in the image are yellow-white like our Sun; these are adult stars that shine by hydrogen fusion. Towards the end of their lives, the stars become cooler and larger. End-stage stars are the orange dots in the image, and even later they cool down and expand to become red giants toward the end of the life cycle. These bright red stars swell to many times larger than our Sun’s size and begin to shed their gaseous envelopes. The “blue stragglers’’ are other stars that appear in the image. Boosting the star’s energy-production rate, these are older stars that acquire a new lease on life when they collide and merge with others. I captured 10 million stars with one photo. This is Omega Centauri. It’s the largest known globular cluster in our Milky Way Galaxy. It is estimated to contain 10 million stars. It’s around 15,000 light years from Earth. I captured it with my Celestron RASA telescope, ZWO ASI533MC color camera, and an Antlia L-Filter from Starfront Observatories in Texas. #space #astronomy
