This month in 1979, the UK ska-pop group Madness was in the studio recording the song "One Step Beyond." It subsequently became a historical ska moment, thanks primarily to the music video. The dancing style seen in the video became a signature ska move due to its distinctiveness, energy, and association with the ska and 2 Tone music scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The video features a dance called the "Nutty Train", where band members from a conga line, marching with exaggerated, energetic steps. The term "Nutty Train" was not explicitly coined by a single individual but is closely associated with Madness and their management, particularly with their producer Clive Langer and manager Dave Robinson. The term "Nutty" itself comes from the "Nutty Sound", a description that Madness and their fans used to define their quirky, energetic style that combined ska, pop, and punk elements. Jamaican ska singer Prince Buster first performed the song "One Step Beyond," which he released as a B-side for his 1964 single "Al Capone." The Music Video to “One Step Beyond” by Madness Madness’s debut album is nothing short of a masterpiece for the manner in, which it brought together elements of 2 tone, ska, rocksteady, and new wave in a way no other artist has since. Fueled by the single “One Step Beyond”, the song’s music video featured the band unveiling their Nutty Train dance. The live performance was shot at a North London pub named The Hope & Anchor. The song was originally recorded by a Jamaican ska singer name Prince Buster as the B-side of his 1967 single “Al Capone.” Having recorded the Prince Buster tribute tune “The Prince” for their debut single, Madness covered “One Step Beyond” as their follow-up. The Nutty Boys even named themselves after a Buster song, “Madness.” In an interview with the Daily Mirror, frontman Suggs had this to say about the song: “We used to play the Hawaii 5-0 theme as a novelty cover version to start our shows. When we got bored we did this track instead, but the original recording was only 45 seconds long. We didn’t even think it would get on the album. Our record company boss heard it and got our producers to loop it. We still start every gig with it. We’ve tried other songs but that’s the one we always come back to. Cathal’s introduction is a clarion call.” #Music #Madness

The Specials, The Selecter, Bad Manners.

MADNESS - ONE STEP BEYOND (1979) Continuing on in my ranking of my 100 favorite classic alternative songs of all time is Madness and “One Step Beyond” at No.95. One of the things I love most about this track is the spoken intro - “Hey you! Don’t watch that! Watch this! This is the heavy, heavy monster sound … ONE STEP BEYONNNNNNDDDD!” Cue the saxophone. It is pure silliness, pure fun, pure ENERGY. I love instrumentals and, the fact that Madness have their own, it really makes me happy.
