Open-ended and closed-ended toys both have a valuable place in a child’s playtime, and it’s not about one being better than the other—they simply serve different purposes. Open-ended toys, like blocks or play silks, inspire creativity and imagination. They allow children to explore, create their own games, and set their own rules, encouraging problem-solving and independent thinking. I especially love watching how kids interact as a group with open-ended toys, collaborating, negotiating roles, and building something completely their own. It’s incredible to see their creativity and teamwork come to life. Closed-ended toys, on the other hand, often have a specific goal or outcome, like puzzles or shape sorters. These toys help children develop focus, practice following instructions, and build confidence as they achieve the intended result. By offering a balance of both, we can support a child’s creativity and cognitive development while keeping playtime fun and engaging! Added an interactive working laundry machine to our play land, and it’s so cool. I love that it makes sounds, and actually rotates the clothes inside the machine!
