After learning this method you will understand how to open up to someone where it doesn’t feel overbearing, doesn’t set the vibe off, and you can finally stop overthinking how to say everything. First, you should understand the difference between oversharing and vulnerability. Vulnerability is showing the real you, oversharing is dumping your problems on someone else. The best way I can explain this is with an example. Let’s say you were asked, “What was hard about your past?” “I was bullied a lot in school and so I became a little shy and unconfident, and like right now I don’t even know if you are actually enjoying being around me or just filling in space in your day.” Think about how much pressure this puts on someone. You are begging for their approval without asking for it. What about this response: “I was bullied a lot in school and this made me a little shy as an adult. You might have noticed I’m more reserved as a person, but this is a small part of me. The way I’m answering so freely is helping me too. I appreciate you.” No one explains past the surface of things like this. To be able to be freely vulnerable without that weird feeling is when you have a wide scope of your life. It’s when you build an understanding of yourself to see that the things you share are the real you but are not all of who you are. You can be freely vulnerable in an inspiring way when you have a lens like this. The next understanding is that people naturally love familiarity and comfort. When want to open up, make sure you are on the same page with the person you are speaking to. If they ask a question that has an unexpectedly deep answer and the vibe is lighthearted, make sure to meet the person where they are. This means saying something as simple as “My answer is a little deep, do you want me to share?” This sets the pressure off the both of you while putting the ball in their court. You let them give you “permission” to share, and it won’t feel overbearing. The overbearing feeling happens when a deep bomb is dropped unexpectedly.
