When a light wave moves from a less dense medium (like air) into a denser medium (like water or glass), its speed decreases, causing the light to bend toward the normal—an imaginary line perpendicular to the surface. Conversely, moving from a denser to a less dense medium speeds up the light, bending it away from the normal. While the light’s frequency remains constant, its wavelength changes, and the degree of bending depends on the refractive indices of the two media, described by Snell’s Law.
