How to Avoid Dual Leaders in an Apple Tree 🍏✂️ 🥷🌿 Pruning your apple tree? One of the biggest mistakes I see is letting dual leaders (two competing main stems) develop. This weakens the tree, causes structural issues, and can lead to breakages under heavy fruit loads. Beginner gardeners panic about cutting back the main stem on young fruit trees but it’s ESSENTIAL! But don’t worry—here’s how to fix it! ✅ Step 1: Identify the strongest, most upright central leader. This is the one you want to keep. ✅ Step 2: Look for competing vertical stems—these need to go! Use sharp, clean secateurs to remove the weaker one at the base. ✅ Step 3: Make clean, angled cuts just above a healthy outward-facing bud to encourage open growth. ✅ Step 4: Keep an eye on regrowth—apple trees love to send up new shoots, so check back in summer and winter to maintain good structure. A single strong leader = a healthier, more productive tree with better airflow and balance! 🍎🌳 I’d love to hear how you’re all getting on with your winter fruit tree pruning (except for cherries leave them until summer Ninjas 😜) #gardenninja #appletree #fruittrees #gardeningtips #pruning #gardenersworld #gardenrescue #gardenhack #urbangarden #gardenlife #gardenlovers #loveyourgarden #plantsmakepeoplehappy #orchard #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #allotment #forager #homesteading #homesteadlife #carbonneutral #selfsufficient #selfsufficiency #leeburkhill

Maintaining this orchard meadow for wildlife! It is always great to have meadow grass / wildflower patches throughout your orchard. Cutting them at different times not only benefits wildlife, but makes your maintenance schedule easier too! These rules apply to any patches of wildflower or long grass throughout your garden to create a more diverse range of habitats in your plot 🪴 #meadow #wildflower #orchard #gardenersofinstagram

RIP to all of the fruit trees that came before I found out that @bunnings have in-store horticulturists 💔 Tbh putting ‘establish fruit trees’ on my 2025 bingo card felt like a pretty daunting challenge, given my history of planting orchards with good intentions and then slowly watching them wither away. Thank GAWD for my newlyfound knowledge that some @bunnings stores come complete with a fully qualified and very helpful horticulturalist in the garden centre! All you’ve gotta do is ask around and find out who they are - or spot the badge on their uniform - and you’ll suddenly have a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. Things like what to plant, where to plant, when to do so and all the things you need to know about soil types, wind exposure, watering and more are easy peasy pudding and pie for these clever folk. Hope this is helpful, happy growing! 🍎🍊🍋🍏🫐🍇 #ad #orchard #fruittrees #bunningsinspo #gardening

Homestead Orchard pt 1 🍎 It’s always been a dream of mine to have an orchard, and when @adreslinski and I finally bought our home, we knew those dreams would be realized. We picked the sunniest spot on our ten acre property and got to work. Here’s a breakdown: THE TREES 🍒 The first step was unboxing and watering our 20 fruit trees. @fastgrowingtrees was kind enough to send a combination of plums, peaches, nectarines, pears, apricots, cherries and apples. The trees all arrived in great shape and were ready to get into the ground THE DESIGN ☀️ To compliment my circular garden design, I arranged the lines of trees like rays of sun coming out from the edge. Maybe not the most efficient design, but definitely the most aesthetic with plenty of room between the trees (10-12 feet between trees, 12 ft or more between rows) THE PLANTING 🍑 I wasn’t about to dig 20+ holes with this compacted soil, so I rented a 24 inch auger - holes should be about 2x the diameter of the rootball. Because the soil was a bit sandy in certain areas, I amended with @espomaorganic soil mix, added Biotone for a nutrient kickstart and added a trop dressing of land & sea compost. WATERING 💧 New plantings, especially trees, need PLENTY of water, and in addition to watering in the hole before planting, I water them once every 2-3 days. II’s been a HOT start to fall, so I water each tree for about 3 minutes which is the equivalent of 5+ gallons of water for my hose WHAT’S LEFT TO DO 🌳 I was supposed to have a few trees trimmed and removed BEFORE the orchard was planted, but our tree person had to cancel the day of because of a machine breakdown. UGH. This will eventually add about 2-3 hours of light to the orchard To further amend the soil, I will be adding companion plants and cover crops around the trees and between the rows. Hopefully over time this will improve my soil quality over time and encourage more pollination 🐝 This is a BIG project that will last for years, so stay tuned fore more updates as I grow and learn along the way 🙏 #orchard #fruittrees #fruittree #michigan #michiganhomestead #homestead #homesteading

The Riverlands, South Australia @sue_singingmagpieproduce One of the richest regions for growing fruits in Australia! 2 hours 45 minutes from Adelaide or close to 3 hours if you’re in a tiny Kia Picante! You drive through the most incredible landscape navigating hills then descending into the most spectacular flat plains. It’s so surreal, like something out of a futuristic dystopian movie! It’s tough to maintain size and robustness of a business and operate with integrity and substance in a world where profits and growth are your main drivers and yet Sue pushes with this business on farms established 100 years ago and have won numerous awards for her products. I can’t speak more highly of Singing Magpie Products from hand cut dried quince, figs, Chinese and Medjool dates, to dark chocolate dipped dried Cara Cara navel and blood oranges to the most delectable award winning Sticky Quince Syrup that works so well in everything sweet and savoury. A personal note to all my friends and family reading this, if you ever want to buy me a gift, this is the only place you need to go to! As I said, when you come across a good thing, you tell the world about it! You’re amazing Sue!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ #riverlands #southaustralia #fruit #orchard #driedfruit #integrity #bestnaturaldriedfruit #smallbusiness #supportsmallbusiness #supportaustralianmade #australianmade #familybusiness #generosity #bestproduce
