Osman Hamdi Bey’s “Mihrab” (1901) elicits a controversial outlook. It blatantly challenges traditional norms, breaks religious values and rulings at the time of the decline of the Ottoman Empire. Hamdi, who was from the elite class, adopted an Orientalist gaze in his painting. At a time where people were beginning to favour secularism over Islam, this painting provides an insight into how people were thinking in the Ottoman Empire before its collapse. The most striking tension lies in the woman’s presence in the mihrab and how she sits directly on a rehal (Quran stand), with religious books placed beneath her feet, a posture that sharply contradicts and greatly disrespects Islamic norms. The painting exposes the growing tension between Islamic sacredness and Western aesthetics, where an elite class were actively lobbying in favour of western modernity at the expense of religious morals and values. India as You’ve Never Seen It Edwin Lord Weeks (1849–1903) was an American painter born in Boston who became one of the leading figures of 19th-century Orientalism. Trained in Paris under academic masters such as Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme, he chose early on to travel in order to nourish his art. He journeyed across North Africa, Turkey, Persia, and especially India, where he spent long periods observing architecture, markets, palaces, and everyday life. Unlike many Orientalist artists who painted from imagination, Weeks worked from his own sketches and firsthand experiences in the field. He even published a travel account, From the Black Sea Through Persia and India, reflecting his deep immersion in these cultures. His work is distinguished by remarkable architectural precision and radiant light that gives India a monumental, almost timeless dimension.
