Osedax, the "bone-eating" marine worm, thrives on the remains of dead marine animals by penetrating bones and extracting nutrients. Their unique adaptation has expanded our understanding of nutrient recycling by scavengers in deep-sea ecosystems, making them a significant find in marine biology. #osedax #bonefeeding #boneeating #marinehabitat #marineworld #marinebiodiversity #marinefacts #marineworms #boneeater #worms #zombie #zombieworms

Still thinking about those oddly named deep-sea creatures from last week’s post? Well… meet the 🪱 Bone-Eating Snot Flower Worms (Osedax) in action, thriving on a whale fall 🐋 🔊 Turn on the volume to hear how these worms feed, explained by the researchers who discovered this whale fall in the deep. 📹 @nautiluslive 2019. Midweek moment of zen brought to you by bone-eating worms 🦴 Lacking mouths and guts, Osedax worms survive by producing a “root system” that digests the surrounding bone and releases collagen and lipids that the worm then consumes. The roots produced by these unique worms also house symbiotic bacteria that appear to play a crucial role in nutrition. Since 2004, scientists worldwide have discovered over 30 species of Osedax occurring at depths from 10 to 4,000 meters (32 to 13,123 feet). Various species can colonize a broad array of bones from fish, marine mammals, birds, turtles, and terrestrial mammals. These worms can quickly consume bones, removing visual evidence of a sunken whale skeleton in as little as a decade.

This Worm Eats Without a Mouth 😳🪱 Osedax is a deep-sea worm with no mouth or stomach. It survives on whale bones using bacteria inside its body. Follow for deep-sea facts that feel unreal 👇 @doyouknow.channel_ #facts #ocean #deepsea #science #animalfacts

Freshwater nematode. Did you know that nematodes are one of the most abundant animals on the planet? It is estimated that they represent up to 80% of all terrestrial animals in terms of number.

Can animals show us a better way to live? This is a deep sea isopod we collected from over 1,000 meters. Isopods are simple invertebrates, but they’ve colonized virtually all areas of planet earth - from the highest peaks to the deepest trenches of the ocean. Extreme temperatures, low oxygen, and nearly no food. What role do they play in the deep ocean? Secrets to our survival are buried and stored in the tissues of so many ocean species, and I want to use this information to create striking new evidence for their protection. We’re cooking up some exciting work here. Never thought bugs could be so charismatic! No isopods were harmed in the making of this video (they were all returned to the ocean after some quick samples!). Big love to @ollieshipley27 for showing me how amazing this species is

Unlimited earthworm hack 🪱🚀 I feed earthworms to my pets several times a month. I also use vermicompost for my plants and isopod bins. For this, I have set up a worm tower using simple stuff to have continuous supply of earthworms, compost and worm tea while utilising my kitchen waste. Points to remember (personal experience and research): • Use only Red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) earthworms • Put scraps (chopped) in the bin only after the previous food scraps have been decomposed (once a week is okay for bin this size) • Always bury the scraps instead of just putting it on top, this ensures that pests and flies do not lay eggs in those scraps • Keep the tower in a dark and shaded area. The ideal temperature is between 15-30 for fastest results • Do not put meat, dairy, citrus, oily, salty and spicy food • Always keep the top cloth moist, the whole bin should feel moist but never dripping wet • Occasionally (every month or so) put dried and grounded egg shells as it helps in efficient digestion because worms don't have teeth • Worms double every 60–90 days, so when you prepare the same mix in the topmost container, they will all climb up in a week. Then, you can repeat the same process once the bin gets filled up again . #pet #gardening #aquarium #animal #sustainability
