What’s in your OT tool box?🧰🛠️ Here are my go to Low cost - Low tech items in my OT Tool Box for interventions: 1️⃣Cones: -Place items out of reach while standing or sitting unsupported to facilitate coordination, balance, and functional reaching. -Place items around room to simulate Item retrieval and walker safety. -Place cones on floor to create an obstacle course for wc users or walking path. 2️⃣Deck of Cards: -Instruct pt to sort cards in colors, suites, and numerically to address cognitive skills. -place cards in line on floor, while standing have pt organize cards with their feet to address coordination and balance. 3️⃣Chip Clips: -use clips to pick up various items for fine motor benefits. -place clips on patients UB and LB, instruct to take off to simulate dressing skills. 4️⃣Ball: -Engage in ball toss for coordination and balance benefits. -Grade ball toss up with over head, posterior, and BLE threading of ball. -Ball toss with naming category items for cognitive benefits. 1️⃣ Push coins into playdough so just a ridge is showing. 2️⃣ Pull the coins out and tuck them into the palm as you go back for more. It’s been such a fun challenge so far to brush up on interventions for so many diagnoses! My OT brain is loving every opportunity to add to my ‘OT toolbox’ And yes… you read that last one correctly😅 Grad school certainly did NOT prepare me for that one but it was a fun challenge to modify their ADL/IADL!

What’s in our OT toolbox today? 🧰✨ @ashh_denny OTD, OTR/L, was curious how cueing may impact changes in functional mobility/wheelchair mobility in her patients with Parkinson’s, as there was need for more than just verbal cueing. 🌟 Things I Wish I Knew Earlier as a Pediatric OT 🌟 1️⃣ Play is children’s superpower. It’s not “just play”—it’s how kids explore, problem-solve, and build every skill they need. 2️⃣ The sensory world feels less overwhelming when the child is in control. Offer choices, not mandates! Empowerment is the way for regulation. 3️⃣ Eye contact isn’t the goal—engagement is. A shared laugh, a turn taken, a finger pointing to the next toy… that’s connection. Honor every child’s way of relating. 4️⃣ Masking looks like “good behavior” but can hurt in the long run. When kids suppress their needs to fit in, exhaustion and burnout follow.
