othering language is always the gateway to normalizing intolerance (and yoo-gen-ix). I say this a lot here, but language MATTERS.

Othering is used to dehumanize & marginalize a person to bolster another. It makes a person small so another can take up more space. Spiritually abusive & religiously traumatic spaces justify othering with sacred language. In reality, OTHERING is a far cry from the heart of God. “A brain in survival mode is biologically incapable of experiencing compassion.” When I heard Deb Dana (one of the most recognized names in Somatics and a founder of the @polyvagalinstitute) say this on @sharonsalzberg’s podcast I knew I had to share it immediately (even if I AM in bed looking disheveled post-surgery). Before I make this “political” — I want you to pause and consider: ❔When is the last time YOU were nasty to someone? And what was your nervous system doing at the time? 👉🏼Maybe someone cut you off in traffic and you hurled a so-unlike-you expletive at them? 👉🏼Maybe your kid is dealing with bullying so you called a child a mean name? 👉🏼Maybe you have a favorite frenemy you gossip about because you feel threatened by their success? What do all these situations have in common? 🧠 Our access to compassion is being thwarted by a brain stuck in survival mode. I’m sure there was an early evolutionary explanation for this phenomenon… like, easier to 🗡️ an enemy in a battle over hunting grounds if you don’t feel compassion for them. But this biological explanation needs to NOT become an excuse for the rhetoric and behavior we are seeing play out on a world stage. All the heightened, fear-mongering content is shared with intent: to keep us scared, stuck, divided — and divorced from our compassion. I actually think *most* people are inherently good and caring. I also know that ALL people have nervous systems and that survival mode can make us act in ways that are not indicative of that inherent goodness. If there’s someone in your family or feed who might need to hear this — you know, the uncle posting those hyperbolic, propaganda-laced videos about “undocumented villains” or “LGBTQ grooming” — give this video a reshare. As much as we are biologically predisposed to divide and hate each other — I HAVE TO BELIEVE that we can learn to be better and do better.
