This kitchen lived in my brain for 2 years as we built ReWild. The basic vision was there and changes were made as we figured out how all these salvaged pieces from different eras would work together with modern appliances to create a beautiful and functional kitchen. I love that these handcrafted pieces will continue to be admired and used. From the pin & cove drawers that date back to the 1880’s, to original marble slabs perfect for working with dough, to the 100 year old cast iron sink and a vent hood we crafted with salvaged wood from a SC barn. It’s a soulful space where our guests can prepare meals and it feels like one that has experienced generations of family gatherings. 11 years waiting for this and I can hardly believe it’s real ✨ the kitchen is even more beautiful and functional and warm and welcoming than I imagined. It all came together at the end with some old pieces we hauled in a dump trailer and wood we weren’t sure would work and decisions made on the fly. That’s usually how Brian and I work best - but I was nervous this project needed a professional! But we pulled it together and I couldn’t ♥️ it any more. Originally the kitchen was designed with a pantry in the back and a wall separating it - but as soon as the framing was up we knew we had to open it up. Brian and I found the pantry cabinet out of a courthouse in Oregon at @auroramills and had to engineer the ceiling height a few inches to make it work! It’s the perfect depth and feels like it was meant to be there. Brian dug into designing an epic forged rangehood and worked with @ponderosa_forge to bring his idea to life… down to the brass M5 brand. I worked with our favorite team and loyal customers at @riggsshowroom for our lineup of Wolf and SubZero appliances - the range has a double flat top I’m already in love with and plan to feed lots of ranch guests on! The backsplash is the same Alluvial black leathered quartzite as the counters with a shelf like my parents have. The top is mushroom wood (from a mushroom farm where the fungi eat the soft wood leaving a deeply textured hardwood) The open shelves were a real risk 🤣 these old trestle boards were a mess of old nails and rough edges but I took a hammer and a wire brush to them and they cleaned up just fine. The butcher block came from an old butcher shop in Pennsylvania and instagram had lots of opinions on that one 🤣 The lighting is a mix of semi flush mounts we found at random places from Lowe’s to Rejuvenation to budget outlets - I didn’t want any can lights and it works. We’re still waiting on a few things - the big island will have a copper countertop next week and dishwasher isn’t in yet. The barstools I loved (and a few other things) were too pricey for ranch life so I found dupes on @wayfair and they are great. I’ll share links in my stories! #fivemarysbuildsahouse #m5ranchhouse

When we were first designing the kitchen I had so many plans to have a fully unfitted kitchen. Which is a kitchen made entirely of various hand crafted pieces - hutches, tables, work spaces, etc. it’s how kitchens used to look way before formal cabinetry became a thing. I’m thankful we didn’t end up going all in (it’s hard to find the perfect fit of different antiques in NS!) and the cabinets make for so much amazing storage and add a really pretty colour to the room, but I love how the rest came together. When I say the wood all tells a story I mean it! The walls pulled from a torn down barn, the island built from planks from an old dairy parlour (handmade by @redbeardrusticswc ), the floors from an 1800s homestead we sanded and refinished ourselves, and the butcher block out of a mid 1900s butcher shop I scored on marketplace two years before we even built our house (the entire wall was designed around it!) I love the timeless beauty of it all! Every surface and space has a purpose and there is still a place for everything! The fridge is tucked around a corner still close enough but out of view, and we haven’t had a microwave in 18 years. I’m also thankful for the hand crafted thick wood pieces to hold things like my cast iron pans that get banged around and would inevitably mark up pretty cabinets.
