5 painting tips I wish I knew sooner as an artist! 1. Use Frog Tape instead of Blue Painters Tape. Different tapes have different levels of adhesion, and green frog tape claims to be one of the strongest. Always helps to paint a matte medium layer after laying the tape down, before color! 2. Always do an underpainting! It can be any color you’d like. This way, no bits of white show through your canvas. 3. If you’re going to use paint markers, PRIME your canvas! This will make sure the markers don’t “skip.” You want the surface to be as smooth as possible for the paint markers, and priming will help. 4. If you’re using acrylics, try a slow drying medium! This will give you more time to work with your paints on the canvas and slow drying time. 5. If you’re painting acrylic gradients, buy a spray bottle and fill it with water! On the mist setting, gently wet your canvas to increase smoother blending.

Don’t paint on a white canvas! When you prep your canvas with your favorite color, you will find that your painting will become more dynamic and interesting. And you won’t be combating that white canvas that will come through the entire painting. Paint your canvas your favorite color. Any color you want! This is called toning your canvas or an under painting. There will be tiny bits of that color shining through your painting once your finished and it will make all the colors look more cohesive- like the have a relationship with each other. I like a pink canvas because it gives my painting a warm glow. I like seeing little bits of pink coming through at the end. It’s like a treat for the eyes. You can dictate the mood of a painting just by the color you paint your canvas initially. The temperature of the color will affect the end feeling of a painting. Black kills the delicacy and turns pink into dirty cement. I previously showed you the Raw Umber mix for soft skin tones, but adding Alizarin Crimson + Viridian Green + Ultramarine Blue creates the intense richness you need for petals and fabrics. For the perfect balance, mix two parts Alizarin to keep the redness dominant, with just one part each of Viridian and Ultramarine to deepen and cool the shadow. Tint your canvas before you start your drawing or under painting! This accomplishes two important things: 1)It takes away the sometimes scary blankness and “pristine” newness of the white canvas that can be very intimidating for some artists, and 2) it does a lot of work for you by establishing your mid tones immediately and helping you gauge your lights and darks. Your paintings will go faster and easier I promise! Try a thinnish wash of burnt sienna. It works well for many paintings including landscapes and especially portraits! Of course this is only for work in acrylic, oil, or other opaque media, not transparent watercolor. … Was this helpful?
