Since quite a few friends have been interested in the kind of books I have collected in my home library over the past 15 years, I thought it might be interesting to share this little video. Beyond the joy of holding a first edition of a rare book and admiring the sheer beauty of these antiquarian volumes or the interesting contents therein, I am equally captivated by the unique stories that each individual copy of a book withholds. Here is the story of one such copy!

Why restore old books? Why not just buy a new one? When it comes to these old books I'm fascinated by every part of them. They represent another world where everything was set up for print by letter press, every word set by a type setter. The images all stamped onto the page by presses. Of course this wasn't a small one book at a time business, massive print machines ran off thousands of books, but the process was much more hands on with people placing the various fonts letter by letter to get the job done. The cloth bound covers were produced much the same way with a design stamped onto the cover, each colour a different pass. To me they represent a process that although can be done today, it is so small scale as to be largely a lost art. The cost to produce this book with the same methods it was originally made would be exorbitant. So when I buy an old book like this, firstly I feel like I've found treasure, it's a snapshot of a process from a time lost to us. Yet it has survived against all odds. Then when it's in bad condition, falling apart and frayed I'm just moved by it, that if it's not treated with care and bought together again, it's doomed to the landfill or to be picked apart, never to be as intended and truly lost to being read or admired. The story of course remains, but words are changed and meanings redefined, all the more in our current age which chooses to stand in contempt or judgement of the past rather than to learn from it. Words are changed to suite modern sensibility removing the opportunity to engage with the text as the author inteded. Lastly to preserve and restore the broken things seams to me a noble persuite in today's throw away society. Learning the skills needed to maintain, preserve and renew the books I buy has bought me so much pleasure. It forces you to slow down, there are processes that just have to sit over night, time and pressure are needed to straighten out those bent boards and wrinkled papers. I'm sure there is a life lesson there somewhere.

There’s something timeless about antique books: the texture, the history, the quiet stories hidden in their pages... Sharing these little treasures is one of my favorite parts of what I do. If you enjoy old books, meaningful objects, and beautifully aged details, you’re always welcome here. Follow along for more shelved treasures and finds from my collection🫶🏽🥹.

Sometimes the quietest books hold the richest lives. From the outside — just faded cloth and a simple title. But inside… firesides, villagers, bakers, misers, and gentle Yorkshire days painted in colour. A reminder that old books rarely shout. They wait to be opened. Not every treasure glitters on the shelf. 📚 Never judge a book by its cover.
