In the Aristotle's Wheel Paradox, a large wheel has a smaller, fixed concentric circle inside it, and the whole structure rolls along a surface without slipping. At first glance, we expect the larger and smaller circles to trace different distances, since they have different circumferences. But surprisingly, both appear to cover the same ground, which feels like a contradiction. To visualize what is going on, think of it as the smaller wheel moving much slower than the larger wheel. So for the smaller wheel to move the same distance as the larger wheel, the smaller wheel "slips" as it moves along its path. The solution lies in how we interpret motion: ⭕️ The outer circumference is in contact with the ground and determines the distance traveled. ⏺️ The inner circle is fixed to the larger wheel, so while it rotates, it doesn’t roll or trace its own path on the ground. Rotation does not imply translation unless there is direct contact with the surface. The paradox was named after the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384–322 BC), due to his foundational work on motion, continuity, and measurement. However, there is no direct evidence that Aristotle posed the wheel paradox exactly as it is stated today. Nothing can travel faster than the speed of light. That is one of the most fundamental laws of all of physics. And yet… right now, the Universe appears to be expanding faster than that. Because space itself is expanding, when we look out at distant galaxies they appear to be moving away from us at faster than the speed of light, what’s known as “superluminal” motion. But Einstein famously showed that nothing can travel faster than light at 300,000km/s in his theory of relativity. It is a speed limit that applies across the entire Universe. At first, this seems like a paradox with a fundamental law of physics somehow getting broken here, but rather counter-intuitively it’s not. Because the key to this isn’t about things moving through space…it’s about what space itself is doing. And even asking this question “of is the universe expanding faster than the speed of light” is a bit of a moot point, because the expansion technically doesn’t have a traditional “speed” either, it’s like asking am I heavier than I am tall?
