Tried a proper Teesside parmo for the first time in Darlington at Manjaros and I finally understand why people in the North East won’t stop talking about it. If you’ve never had one, a parmo is basically breaded chicken covered in béchamel sauce, topped with a ridiculous amount of melted cheese, and usually served with chips and garlic sauce. It sounds heavy… because it is. But somehow it works. Coming from Canada, this is not something I was prepared for at all. It’s one of those proper local UK foods that you don’t really see outside of places like Teesside, which probably makes it even better. I went in expecting it to be overhyped, but this might be one of the most unapologetically indulgent meals I’ve had in the UK. No pretending it’s healthy. No trying to be fancy. Just full commitment.
