Pascal’s Wager is one of the more curious and controversial arguments for the existence of God in the history of philosophy. Pascal was a philosopher, but he was also a mathematician, and his argument is based upon probability theory. Pascal argues that when it comes to the belief in God, there are two options: either God exists, or God does not exist. And when it comes to living our lives, we have two options as well: either we live as atheists, or we live as believers. Now suppose that I live my life as an atheist. I do not go to church, I don’t read my Bible, and God does exist. Well, in that scenario, I will lose eternal Paradise. I lose a ticket to heaven, or at worst, I might get hell. On the other hand, imagine you live your life like a believer. You go to church, you sing your hymns, and you read your Bible. Well, if God exists, you are granted eternal Paradise. You go to heaven. For Pascal, this is the safest bet in history. Why would you not bet your few finite years on the possibility of an eternal return? As Pascal put it, ‘Granted that faith cannot be proven, what harm will come to you if you gamble on its truth and it’s proved false? If you gain, you gain all. If you lose, you lose nothing.’ So what do you think? Will you bet on God and buy your eternal life insurance? Or do you think Pascal has gone wrong somewhere?
