1. Think “Mammal to Mammal” before worrying about what to say or not say. Sit on the floor or let them climb on the top of a car, on the back of a couch, or walk on window ledges. 3. Energetic signaling: Drop any attachment around whether the PDA child speaks to you or responds. See if you can think of your physical presence as an “offering” that the child can respond to or not. 4. Reduce speech: Experiment with not asking any questions or talking until your child initiates. 5. Use declarative language (see “The Declarative Language Handbook”). Here are some starter scripts to practice: “I wonder…” “I notice…” “you can…” “I can…” “I remember when…” Try to use for connection, rather than to get them to do something. 6. Reduce the complexity of speech. Think about one sentence at a time, with a pause afterwards, rather than speaking in paragraphs. 7. Experiment with a “Sacred Pause” that feels WAY longer than natural after you say one or two sentences. Give the PDA child or teen time LOTS of time to respond. 8. When your PDA child or teen rejects you (“Stop talking,” growling, not saying anything, shutting the door), think of it as an opportunity to signal autonomy, which is progress. Take nothing personally. 9. Think your attempts at engagement as “seeds” that you plant. The seed may sprout two weeks later, if given space and when you give it space. 10. Embrace info-dumping about interests from the child, rather than expecting (or energetically desiring) reciprocal conversation.
