Despite Barney’s entire playboy history, the scriptwriters envisioned this sudden change as a father as the biggest turning point in his character development and kept the studio as quiet as possible during filming to preserve the intimacy of this scene. Neil Patrick Harris delivered his lines so sincerely while filming this scene with the baby in his arms that the director completed the take in one go without cutting. The actor later stated in interviews that being a parent in his own life helped him feel the emotionality in this scene from a deeper place and that he established a real fatherly bond while playing his character’s vulnerable moment.
