Remembering the legendary country western singer, songwriter and yodeler, Rubye Rose Blevins, better known as Patsy Montana, born on this day in 1914. . Jean Shepard November 21 1933 - September 25 2016 Jean Shepard was one of Country Music’s strongest voices and a trailblazer for every woman who followed. Born in Oklahoma and raised in California, she grew up singing honky-tonk and western swing, and by her teens she was playing bass and fronting an all-female band called The Melody Ranch Girls. Her bold sound caught the ear of Capitol Records, and at just 20 years old she burst onto the scene with A Dear John Letter, a duet with Ferlin Husky that made her a national star. Known for her clear, powerful voice and unapologetically traditional style, Shepard became a fixture of the 1950s and ’60s country charts with songs like A Satisfied Mind, Beautiful Lies, Second Fiddle (To an Old Guitar), and Slippin’ Away. She championed strong, real-life storytelling long before it was common for women in the Country Music. 70 years ago today, on her 22nd birthday she became a member of the Grand Ole Opry, ultimately spending 61 years as one of the Opry’s most loyal and influential performers, she is still the longest tenured female member in the show’s history (narrowly beating out Connie Smith who recently celebrated 60 years).
