Most of the time when parents say this, they don’t mean what we mean 👀 But when it does mean true lethargy… it’s a very different situation. Knowing the difference matters. MOM. As teeth push through the gums, they trigger pressure and inflammation, which is why babies get fussy, chew on everything, and have swollen gums. What helps: • Chilled teething rings (not frozen) – reduce inflammation and numb the area • Cold, damp washcloths – simple and effective • Firm silicone teethers – biting provides counter-pressure that can reduce pain • Gentle gum massage – short-term relief • Pain medication (when needed) Infant acetaminophen can be used for more significant discomfort (especially before sleep). For babies over 6 months, ibuprofen is another option. Always use weight-based dosing and your pediatrician’s guidance. Remember that kids teeth for a few years and we don’t want to use medication all of the time. What to avoid: • Numbing gels (can be unsafe if swallowed) • Amber necklaces (choking/strangulation risk) • Frozen teethers (can damage gums) Teething is uncomfortable—but it’s temporary and manageable with the right approach. . . . . #teething #pediatrics #babydevelopment NYC pediatrician Brooklyn pediatrician

Tiny humans. Big emotions. Even bigger purpose. 💛 Being a pediatric nurse means advocating for kids who can’t always explain what hurts, celebrating the wins and supporting families through some of their hardest days. It’s IV starts with cartoons playing, sticker rewards after tough moments, and learning how to speak both “toddler” and “terrified parent.” Pediatric nursing has shaped me into a more patient, compassionate, and resilient nurse. If you’re thinking about becoming a peds nurse, know this: it’s challenging, emotional, and unbelievably rewarding. 💉🩺✨ #pediatricnurse #pedsnurse #pediatrics #newgradnurse #studentnurse

Most people panic when they find a tick on their child. That reaction makes sense. A few common mistakes can actually make things worse, though. Follow @collinnaugher.np so you know where to go when you have that 2 AM emergency! Here are 5 things NOT to do when your child has a tick bite and what to do instead 👇 1️⃣ Don’t squeeze the tick’s body because that can push more saliva (and potential pathogens) into the skin ✅ Use fine-tipped tweezers and grab the tick as close to the skin as possible, right at the head 2️⃣ Don’t twist or yank it out quickly because mouthparts can break off and stay in the skin ✅ Pull upward slowly and steadily with even pressure until it releases 3️⃣ Don’t use heat, nail polish, or essential oils because that can irritate the tick and increase the chance of transmission before it detaches ✅ Remove it mechanically with tweezers. Keep it simple and direct 4️⃣ Don’t ignore the bite after removal because symptoms can show up days to weeks later ✅ Watch for 2–3 weeks for fever, rash, fatigue, or joint pain, and take a quick photo of the bite for reference 5️⃣ Don’t throw the tick away immediately because it may be helpful if symptoms develop later ✅ Put it in a sealed bag or container (or tape it to paper) and write the date on it Ok that was 5. Sorry :) Clean the area with soap and water after removal. That’s really all it takes. 🦠 Prophylaxis after a tick bite isn’t routine and is mainly used to prevent Lyme disease in higher-risk cases. 🕒 It has to be started within 72 hours of removal. 🔍 It depends on an Ixodes tick attached for about 36+ hours. 💊 If criteria are met, a single dose of antibiotic can be used, even in young children. 📍 In places like Texas (where I live), it’s usually not recommended due to low risk. 1,304,271

When a baby brings you a book, a lot more is happening than you might think. In this video Selah walks over, picks out a book on her own, brings it to me, and says “ba” for book. Then she points to the duck on the cover and says “da-da” (her attempt at “duck duck”), and later attempts “moo” when we look at the cow. It’s a sweet moment — but developmentally, a lot is happening here. 📚 Intentional communicationWhen a baby brings you something and labels it (“book”), they’re using a word to initiate interaction. That’s an early form of expressive language. 🧠 Symbol recognition When she sees the duck on the cover and says “duck,” she’s showing that she understands pictures represent real objects. This is an important cognitive step in early learning. 👀 Joint attention Opening the book together and pointing to animals creates shared focus between parent and child. Joint attention is one of the strongest predictors of language development. 🐄 Sound imitation When I ask what the cow says and she attempts “moo,” she’s practicing sound imitation — a key step in building speech and vocabulary. 🤝 Social learning Bringing the book to me shows she has learned that reading is something we do together. That social interaction is where a huge amount of early learning happens. So when your baby or toddler brings you a book, it’s not just cute. It’s communication, language development, social connection, and cognitive learning all happening in one small moment. And those little moments add up quickly. In my 10–12 month Mama Meet-Up, I walk through simple ways to encourage language, play, and development during this stage — along with sleep and feeding changes that tend to come up around this age. If your baby is entering this stage and you want ideas for how to support their development, comment MEETUP and I’ll send you the details.
