Searching for ecosystems with native species of Mount Penteli, in order to begin a study and slowly start restoring some of the abandoned quarries — a process that will take years. At an altitude of 1000 meters, we recorded very interesting plant communities that point the way toward the proper restoration of the ecosystem, using only native species. We can observe how the mountain ridge saved this location from the wildfire of 2024. Σπήλαιο Πεντέλης (Νταβέλη) , Μέσα στην καρδιά της Πεντέλης, η σπηλιά του Νταβέλη στέκει γεμάτη θρύλους, μυστήριο και ανεξήγητα φαινόμενα. The ancients managed to mine, transport and lift huge volumes of marble from Penteli, on the rock of the Acropolis, in the middle of the era, which are still impressive today. At least 20 thousand tons of Pentelian marble were used for the construction of the Parthenon. To be able to transport these huge volumes, the ancient craftsmen built the “Lithagogias Street”. The Parthenon was built over an earlier temple of Athena, which was destroyed by the Persians during the Persian Wars. In more detail: It is believed that there existed from the Geometric years (7th century BC), in the place where the Parthenon was built, a brick temple on a stone foundation. In the 6th century an ancient temple was built which was decorated with ancient sculptures that are exhibited in the Acropolis Museum, (lions and Hercules with Triton). After the battle of Marathon, in 490 BC, a marble temple began to be built around the Vor-Parthenon, but it was destroyed in 480 BC. from the Persians. The Parthenon was built on the site of this temple. It began to be built in 447 BC. and the building works were finished in just nine (9) years (a record time for the time) that is, in 438 BC. The decoration works started in 438 and ended in 432 BC. The architects of the temple were Iktinos, who also built the temple of Apollo in Phigalea, and Kallikrates, architect of the Temple of Nike and perhaps of Erechtheion, while the sculptor Phidias was responsible for the decoration and general supervision of the work (“ bishop of all”, as Plutarch mentions).
