The Power of Peppermint 🌿 I used to overlook peppermint oil for a long time. I didn’t think there was much it could do besides provide that minty aroma which to be honest, I wasn’t really in love with. I remember we used it in my old hospital by putting a few drops on a cotton ball in patient’s bathrooms that were struggling with gastrointestinal problems. I think I had a memory association with that and didn’t care for it for that reason.🤣 ⠀⠀ Fast forward to now and it’s one oil I use almost every single day. It is a powerhouse for so many things. One of my favorites ways to use is to put a drop behind my ears prior to exercise. It really helps open my airways and energize me while running. Several studies have shown that using peppermint essential oil during exercise can reduce fatigue, improve performance, increase endurance, improve motivation, and decrease frustration. ⠀⠀ Here’s a few other ways to use it: 🌿Diffuse with citrus for a wake up blend. 🌿Roll on temples for head tension. 🌿Traveling windy roads or on a bumpy boat ride? Roll on some peppermint oil under nose and behind ears. 🌿Add a few drops to shampoo to promote hair growth 🌿Hot day? Make a foot bath with a few drops of peppermint with Epsom salts to cool down. 🌿Mowing lawn on hot day? Add a few drops to a cold wet washcloth and place behind neck. 🌿Add with carrier oil and massage on sore muscles. 🌿Roll a little on neck to say goodbye to hiccups 🌿Diffuse with lemon and lavender for seasonal support. 🌿Use in spray to deter ants in the Spring. 🌿Add a few drops to shower bottom when wanting to wake up or clear sinuses. 🌿Too much time in sun? Soothe that skin by adding a few drops of peppermint and lavender to Aloe Vera. 🌿Massage a few drops with carrier oil on abdomen for digestion support. 🌿Rub a drop under the nose for mental clarity and alertness. 🌿Got an itch? Roll on some peppermint with the lotion or carrier oil on that spot. 🌿Put a drop behind ears before exercise *Peppermint oil is not recommended for use for children under 3 years old. ⠀⠀ Anyone else a peppermint oil fan? What do you mostly use it for?

Some household ingredients are commonly used as natural insect deterrents. Peppermint oil has a strong scent that spiders and other insects tend to avoid, making it popular for doorways and corners. Cinnamon is often used to discourage ants because its smell can disrupt their scent trails. A mixture of baking soda and sugar is sometimes used for cockroaches — sugar attracts them, while baking soda can be harmful when ingested. Vinegar is frequently used to deter ants and fruit flies due to its strong odor. Citrus peels are also known to repel certain insects. These methods aren’t instant exterminators, but they may help reduce insect activity when used consistently. For infestations, professional pest control may be needed. 🍃Make a peppermint extract. I poured over the web for this. There are many ways with slight variations for making a mint extract with that pop of mint that so many of us love. Some say leave for 6 weeks (which is like making a tincture). Some say let the leaves soak for a week. Some say chop the leaves, some say don’t chop the leaves. Some say use Vodka, some say use Everclear. So, I combined all the tips that seemed most worthy (to me) and gave it a shot. Normally I just make a peppermint tincture which is great but lacks the pungent menthol scent of fresh mint that I want to save for a dreary winter day. 🍃Peppermint Extract 🍃Pack a handful of peppermint leaves about ⅔ full into a clean mason jar, pack it in.  🍃Cover with Everclear (or other high proof clear alcohol).  Let it infuse in a cool, dark place for 3-4 days, then strain. 🍃Add a new batch of fresh leaves to the jar and let it infuse for another 3-4 days, then strain. 🍃Repeat this process of infusing, straining, and adding new fresh leaves for 4 or 5 rounds. At the end, strain and you have a super minty extract.    Tips  Only use the leaves, discard the stems. Don’t muddle or chop the leaves, it seems to release more chlorophyll into the extract. I chopped the leaves on my first round and my alcohol was immediately brownish. The next rounds I did not chop and the color change was much slower.  This will last indefinitely if kept in a cool, dark place, in dark bottles. Use in mocktails/cocktails, baking, hot cocoa, minty mocha, or in your tea if your tummy is upset. Enjoy 🍃 #wellness #slowliving #naturalremedies #herbsandspices #backyardgarden #peppermint
