DIY Houseplant Potting Mix! I’m all about that chunky mix, because when it comes to houseplants, good drainage is everything. Potting soil: A rich, moisture-holding base that provides nutrients. Perlite: Lightens the mix and boosts aeration and drainage. Orchid bark: Adds chunky texture and airflow, helping mimic a plant’s natural environment. Horticultural charcoal: Supports drainage, adds nutrients, and keeps the mix fresh by absorbing impurities. I often use store-bought mixes (and that’s totally great!), but I also love experimenting with my own blends to give my plants more variety and support. Want to try this mix yourself? I’ve linked everything I used in my Linktree—check out my bio to shop! #chunkymix #houseplantcare #diypottingmix #plantparentlife #perlite #orchidbark #charcoalforplants #rootrot #indoorplanttips

I didn’t intend to leave this plant to grow in perlite, I was only propagating my Hoya Obovata. That was 3 years ago!!! Perlite can be used as a semi hydroponic set up. Putting your plant in perlite and filling 1/3 of it with water, the perlite absorbs the water and feeds the roots as needed. The only thing you need to make sure to do is add fertilizer. Usually your plants would get this from the soil, but perlite is an inorganic growing medium that you need to add nutrients to. This plant has grown so much and I think I’m going to leave it in here. Sits in an east facing window and gets morning direct sun, and indirect the rest of the day. Have you ever tried growing plants in straight perlite? This is the only one I’ve done it to but it’s thriving! #hoyaobovata #perlite #plantlife #houseplants #plantcare

🤷🏻♀️ Why perlite? Because I’ve had a higher success rate propagating this type of plant in perlite… and I love stacking the odds in our favor. Here’s exactly what I do: 🌱I use a clear cup and made my own drainage holes at the bottom. 🌱 I fully soak the perlite first. 🌱 I make a little hole with my finger and place the cutting so the nodes are covered. 🌱 Then I sit the cup in a deep tray with about ½–1 inch of water. The water should only touch the bottom of the cup so the perlite can wick moisture up. We’re keeping it moist, not drowning it. In a couple of weeks, you’ll start seeing roots forming 💚 👉🏽 Have you ever used perlite to propagate your plants before? Save this for later 🌿 . . . . . . #propagation #hoyakerrii #plantcaretips #plantconsultant #perlite

🌱Which substrate is best for corms?🌱 I tested five different options: perlite, moss, mineral substrate, aroid mix, and water — each with its own pros and cons. Here’s my 1-month update! 👇 🧪 The candidates & their characteristics Perlite – super airy, holds moisture without getting soggy.🌱 Moss (sphagnum) – very stable moisture, but can get too wet if not careful.✨ Mineral substrate – airy, stable structure, very low risk of rot.🪨 Aroid mix – well-draining but a bit “heavier” and slower to warm up.🌳 Water – easy and clean, but high rot risk for sensitive rhizomes.💦 📈 1-Month Update 👉 Perlite, moss & mineral substrate: All three produced almost identical growth — each developed a strong, healthy new leaf. Amazing results and very beginner-friendly. 👉 Aroid mix: This one took longer. The first leaf is only just coming out now. So yes, it works — but definitely slower. 👉 Water: Unfortunately, this was the fail… 💧 The corm rotted in water. For this type of rhizome, I wouldn’t recommend water propagation. 🌟 Final Thoughts If you want safe and fast rooting, perlite, moss, or a purely mineral substrate are your best options. Aroid mix also works, just with more patience. Water, however, is too risky for corms in my experience.
