Things I will do as your personal trainer, pt. 4: Teach you how to warm up properly. Warming up is not optional. It prepares your muscles, joints, and nervous system for the work you’re about to do. Going into a workout cold increases your risk of injury, limits performance, and usually leads to compensations you don’t even realize you’re making. A proper warm-up should increase blood flow, improve mobility, activate the muscles you’re about to train, and help you move better once the weights get heavier. It does not need to be long. It just needs to be intentional. Even just 5-10 minutes will do you right. Train smarter now so you can keep training long-term. You don’t want to have regrets about something you could have easily prevented. DO YOU DO YOUR LAT PULLDOWNS CORRECTLY? 👀🤔 One of the biggest mistakes I see during lat pulldowns as a personal trainer is people not setting their position correctly prior to starting their set. This often leads to them using their biceps more to lift the weight, rather than placing the emphasis on their lats. To fix this, it’s important to get into position by pulling your shoulder blades down and lifting your chest up. This is known as scapula depression and corrects posture and helps to isolate the lats. ✅ Two cues I use when instructing this exercise: ‘Increase the distance between your ears to your shoulders’ Or ‘Pull your shoulders down into your back pockets’ I also tell my clients to focus on bringing their chest to the bar/attachment, rather than bringing the bar down to their chest.
