The standoff: the finale The lengthy colour displays continued, attracting photographers, swimmers and freedivers alike. Everyone was mesmerized by the encounter, taking turns capturing their desired photos and videos. The cuttlefish absolutely did not care about anything in the world, focused on asserting their dominance on each other instead. I was completely mesmerised by the patterns striating across their bodies. It looked like waves of darkness flashing across steadily and consistently. After about 10-15 minutes, the cuttlefish parted ways. It felt much longer, a moment we will never forget! Right place, right time. Lucky to have witnessed this cuttlefish start changing colours as another male cuttlefish entered the area! Giant cuttlefish change their textures and colours as a way to communicate with each other. In this case, it was a warning sign to stay away! Did you know 💡 1. Cuttlefish are not fish; they belong to the cephalopod family, along with octopuses and squids. 2. They have mesmerizing abilities to change color and texture, allowing them to blend seamlessly with their surroundings as a form of camouflage. 3. Cuttlefish have three hearts: two pump blood to the gills, while the third circulates oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. 4. These intelligent creatures possess highly developed brains and are capable of learning and problem-solving. 5. Cuttlefish communicate through a range of color changes, patterns, and body postures, conveying emotions and intentions to other cuttlefish. 6. They have unique W-shaped pupils that provide them with excellent depth perception, aiding in hunting prey and avoiding predators. 7. Cuttlefish have a remarkable ability to control the direction of their movements using specialized fins and a siphon for propulsion. 8. They primarily feed on crustaceans, small fish, and mollusks, using their tentacles to capture prey with lightning-fast strikes. 9. Cuttlefish are short-lived, with most species having a lifespan of 1 to 2 years. 10. While cuttlefish are renowned for their remarkable camouflage abilities, including mimicking the colors and textures of their surroundings, they don't mimic human faces. Their camouflage is primarily for predator avoidance and hunting, and also for communication with other cuttlefish. Cuttlefish can rapidly change the color, pattern, and even texture of their skin using specialized pigment-containing cells called chromatophores, which are controlled by their nervous system. They can also use these abilities to deceive rivals or to attract mates by mimicking the appearance of a female, but this is not a human face imitation. #marinelife #cuttlefish #aquariumhobby #aquarium #reelsfacebook

Have you ever been THIS close to a giant cuttlefish? 🦑 This guy might have been too friendly, coming in real hot to investigate (and steal) the camera Right at the end of mating season, where they die off afterwards, perhaps in his final act mistook my hand for a lovely lady cuttlefish? Or maybe he just wanted to give a little kiss 😘 Either way I had to let go of the camera when he wrapped his tentacles around my hand. And he was strong! Be respectful and don’t touch marine life, unless they touch you I guess? 😆 #freediving #marinelife #cephalopod #cuttlefish #underwaterphotography #marineanimals #myoctopusteacher

The standoff: Part 3 Two Australian Giant Cuttlefish put on the best kaleidoscopic display I have ever seen! The male cuttlefish pair remained locked in battle, sizing each other up the whole time. They slowly floated upwards, above the open space between the rocky reefs. The bigger cuttlefish positioned himself in a way that made him slightly slanted. It almost felt like he wanted the other cuttlefish to get a better view of him and his flashing colours! This continued for another 10 minutes allowing photographers, divers and swimmers alike to take it all in. More videos to come later! Have you ever seen a cuttlefish harpoon a fish before? Australian giant cuttlefish use two special hunting tentacles that act like harpoons to catch their prey! They aren’t that fast so must slowly sneak up on their prey with camouflage to get close enough to strike! . . . . . Can you Imagine giant cuttlefish in #pandora!? @avatar 🎥: @terencetong_ We LOVE the majestic Giant Australian Cuttlefish! 🌈 Aka: squishy rainbow puppy dogs! 🐶 🇦🇺 These creatures call the southern waters of Australia home, and can often be found lounging on shallow reefs along the coast. 👾 And let me tell you, these CuttleBugz aren’t tiny- they can weigh as much as 3 gallons of water (that’s about 23 pounds for us humans) and reach up to a whopping 3 feet in length (that’s the height of a standard door knob! ) 🚪 *peeks over at bedroom door* 😅 But don’t worry, not ALL of them are giants - the majority only grow to about 1 foot long during their 12-24 month lifespan. But size isn’t the only thing that sets these cuttlefish apart. They have a whopping 8 arms and 2 feeding tentacles, which they use to snatch up tasty treats like fish, crabs, and other crustaceans. they’re super fast - their feeding tentacles can blast out faster than we can blink and then retract in sockets behind their eyes like a vacuum with a retractable cord! But what really sets these cuttlefish apart are their W-shaped pupils, which allow them a wide horizontal range of vision. That means they have a panoramic view of their habitat, and no pesky blind spots. So don’t even think about sneaking up on a cuttlefish - they’re watchin’ you!!! 😏👾 If ya read this far, comment CuttleBuddy below & let us know if you’re fans of them! 🏷 #science #nature #biology #marinelife #cuttlefish #octopuses #cephalopods #reef #underwater #diving #oceanconservation #sea #biodiversity #marinebiology #ocean #adoptanoctopus #nationalgeographic #natgeoyourshot #STEM #scuba #scubadiving #underwaterphotography #wildlifephotography #myoctopusteacher #octonation
