Daydreaming my PhD degree was bitter sweet. On one hand I was enjoying the process of learning new things every day, getting inspired by brilliant scholars, getting to share my knowledge through my papers and teaching classes. On the other hand, I was terrified if I would make it to the end. In the last few years of my PhD journey things started to feel endless and I was doubting if I made the right choice to stay in academia. Leaving my non academic job to try transitioning fully to academia was the scariest decision I made in my life. I had no guarantee I would get a job, especially without the PhD degree. But the thought of regretting not trying was even bigger so I took that risk. And I am really glad I did it! There is no better feeling than waking up and realizing that what you have dreamed of has actually become true. If I ever struggle in academia or in life, I can confidently say that if I overcome PhD, I can do anything! I am so grateful to all the support I got from my family, friends and teachers who never doubted my potential. A PhD is one of the most demanding things a person can commit to. And it deserves more than a rushed decision. A lot of people walk into doctoral programs with big ambitions — career growth, credibility, a sense of achievement. Those aren't bad reasons. But a PhD is a very specific kind of training. It's designed to produce researchers who can generate original knowledge, and that process takes years of deep, focused work. If the career you actually want doesn't require that — there might be a faster, less painful road to get there. Before you apply, talk to people already doing the job you want. 3 Warning Signs a PhD Isn’t for You 🚩 1. You’re in it for the Dr. title or academic validation. If your main motivation is having “Doctor” before your name, impressing people, or chasing academic validation, a PhD will get old fast. Even if you finish, you might still feel empty. A PhD is long, challenging, and often isolating.. so if curiosity and a passion for research are not driving you, it’s going to be hard to keep going. 2. You don’t really know what you want to do. Being good at school doesn’t automatically mean grad school is the right path. Grad school is not an extension of undergrad. If you haven’t thought carefully about your long-term goals or what kind of life you want, you might end up spending 5+ years on a path that doesn’t excite you. 3. You’re doing it for the money. If you think a PhD automatically leads to a high-paying job, think again. Most PhDs earn less than people assume, and the opportunity cost is huge.
