Hello!☺️👋 Here’s your latest dose of ‘behind the skins’; a snapshot of the taxidermy process, featuring this beautiful male Ring-neck Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) I found on the road some years ago now. Here, you can observe me working on this bird from the point of ‘feathering’. By this point, I’ve defrosted, skinned, cleaned, washed and preserved the skin, made the anatomical form, dried and sewed, so 1/2 the work has been done by this point, but it’s the fine details that make the biggest impact! 🎨 Although these birds are a common sight in the British countryside, they are by no means native to this land. It’s believed the Romans first introduced them here, all the way from their native lands in Asia. but it was the Normans who popularised them as a gamebird in the 1100’s. Today, estates still rear and release around 40million pheasants in to the countryside, to be shot. Releasing that many non-native species is a bit bonkers to me. I have a bittersweet relationship with these creatures. They are absolutely stunning (and I have one tattooed on me!) and I enjoy spending time watching them, but they have a big impact on our native wildlife for a plethora of reasons. I’m so grateful to @wildjusticeorg for the work they do in challenging the government with such issues. Now, shoots in England need to obtain a licence to release pheasants within 500 m of protected areas.
