Melanocytes increase melanin production when they detect stress: ultraviolet radiation, inflammation, hormonal shifts, or repeated irritation. Over time, signaling pathways (including tyrosinase activation and inflammatory mediators) stimulate excess pigment synthesis. When melanin is produced faster than it can be evenly distributed and shed through normal epidermal turnover, it accumulates in clusters. That’s how localized hyperpigmentation forms. But not all pigment is the same — and this is where treatment matters. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) works through the principle of selective photothermolysis. Specific wavelengths are absorbed by melanin. The pigment converts light energy into heat, which fragments the excess melanin into smaller particles. These particles are then gradually cleared by natural epidermal turnover and immune-mediated processes. IPL is most effective for: • Sun spots (solar lentigines) • Freckles • Superficial epidermal hyperpigmentation • Some types of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (carefully selected cases) IPL is NOT ideal for: • Deep dermal pigmentation • Melasma (especially unstable or hormonally driven forms) • Darker skin types without proper parameter adjustment • Active inflammatory pigmentation without first addressing the trigger The key is depth and pigment behavior. If the pigment sits primarily in the epidermis, IPL can selectively target it while preserving surrounding tissue. If the pigment is deeper or hormonally unstable, energy-based treatments require caution. Pigment management is not just removal — it’s understanding origin, depth, and biological context. Will we run out of pigments? 😵 The truth is that yes we can—and have. Artists’ paints are colored with pigments—finely ground powders extracted from natural resources or synthetically made. And pigments have disappeared for all sorts of reasons over the years. When it happens these days, it’s usually because the only manufacturer who makes them stops production. In fact, it’s happening right now 🫣 Maybe you’ve heard about Alizarin Crimson being retired—as one of the last widely used artist pigments descended from ancient plant dyes, we’re all a little sad to see it go. The good news? We’ve had replacements for years. Introduced to address concerns about lightfastness, Alizarin replacements look fantastic, with much better tinting power and permanence. So bottom line? Even if your pigment of choice runs out—odds are there will be a great replacement in the ever evolving (and ever increasing) modern palette. 🎨 Questions?
