I only clean my chicken coops about every 5–6 months… and they still don’t smell. And…. No flies. No bugs. No moisture. This is the only system I use: diatomaceous earth and pine pellets. After a clean-out I sprinkle a thin layer of DE on the floor, then scatter pine pellets over the whole coop…heavier under the roost bars where most of the poop happens. The pellets absorb moisture and break down slowly, and the DE keeps insects from moving in. Because everything stays dry, it composts in place instead of rotting. I have two coops and a clean-out takes me about 15 minutes each because it comes out in dry clumps instead of wet muck. Simple. Cheap. Low effort. And my coop never smells like a coop. We often get rain and it becomes muddy so adding pine pellets has been a great option! - Cheap Option: only $6:50 at local stores like family farm and tractor supply. Great option to fill an entire run or large area! -Dry & Absorbent: Pine pellets will upsoarb the water and mud and become a fluffy bedding. You can also add water to the pellets to make it fluffy if you area is dry to start with. -Smells Good: Have you ever smelled a pine scented candle, well it’s kind of like this but way less strong. Way better than smelly poop or anything else! -Reduces Flys: Flys come around when it’s wet and muddy and stinky. Short of a major excavation project, doing things like sighting your animal areas on higher ground, having covered, dry areas and adding gutters when you’re able are all useful mitigation tools (and all ones we have in place 😅) Sometimes you still can’t help the mud and standing water that comes with a huge amount of precipitation or a high water table. Have you ever used pine pellets? We love them and they can be great for really soppy and muddy areas just around the property too! How do you deal with standing water issues and livestock? Not quite sure about this new litter mom😅😂 Willy has a neurological condition that causes him to wobble. He does potty on his side, so pine pellets work best for us.
