Place value is "the value represented by a digit in anukver on the basis of it's position in the number". 🟣 By this activity, a child will learn that any number can be broken into groups of TENS & ONES. We did this activity in 2 ways: 1. First I asked my son to put q tips according to the number given, that is, place values of tens and ones 2. With school coming up quick here's a dope idea to help teach place value courtesy of @mathymama How many place-values should your kid know? ⬇️ By the end of… Kinder: tens and ones, only up to 19 1st grade: tens and ones up to 99 2nd - 3rd: thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones 4th grade: everything up to 1,000,000 Understanding place value is the key to the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). These place value cups are a great way to practice identifying the place value of different numbers. Here are questions you can ask: Make the number 852. Which number is in the tens place? The hundreds place? The ones place? Can you make a number that has a 4 in the tens place? What’s the expanded form of 6,741? (This question reinforces how much each digit is “worth”) You can also use the cups to practice addition. Place Value Games 👌🏼 Try this! ⬇️ 🔴 Play with more columns (e.g. up to millions) 🟠 Practise reading / expanding / writing numbers made 🟢 Use MAB blocks to build and compare numbers 🎲 Play with DICE only (each player rolls ‘x’ dice and can rearrange them to make the largest number) 🍿 Place Value POP! This is a printable game on my TpT store where students SPIN digits to make a number. They must read the number correctly to cover a piece of popcorn. If any digit lands on POP! when spun, they must remove all of their counters off the popcorn. The most popcorn pieces WINS! 🧍‍♂️Last man standing: THIS ONE ROCKS! ➡️ Every student writes a number on a whiteboard ➡️ Students stand and don’t share their number ➡️ Teacher says “sit down if…” and gives a command Examples: 💬 Your number has ____ digits 💬 Your number is odd / even 💬 Your number has ____ tens 💬 Your number is greater than ____ 💬 Your number is a multiple of ____ 💬 Your number is a prime / composite number Write your commands up and when there is ONE left standing… check their number does not match any of the commands. 💬 This can provide a great opportunity to discuss and review concepts i.e. “how did you know 334 was even?”, “81 was a multiple of 9?” A solid understanding of place value is crucial for higher mathematical concepts, so go and nail it with your students and make it engaging! 👏🏼 📲 Drop a comment if you’d like my Place Value Frame FREEBIE and I’ll send it to you!
